Split livery trains...

Hi all,

Just a thought - what are peoples ideas on heritage line trains having one livery on each side? For example one side BR blue and the other BR Green? Obviously you wouldn't be able to see both sides at once, and it would add a little more variety for photographers and onlookers...

It is just a thought, and I can assure you that I do not know of any railway currently planning on doing this to any of it's trains!

Happened to Duchess of Hamilton before her re-streamlining. While it gave us a good view of a Stanier "semi" in both liveries, it must have looked ridiculous from a footbridge.

I think the DMU at the Battlefield Line is line that - all over blue one side and blue & grey the other.

It would look a bit like those old Citroen's painted black on the doors and red everywhere else. Doesn't look right to me.

A couple of the EMU's at the Eden Valley Railway have this, although one side was quickly painted over to hide some graffiti and they have not got time/money to paint the other side yet, particularly since it can't be seen from the passenger sides.

I've considered this as well, I think it'd be awesome: 37s with a heritage BR look on one side + front with a D-number and something like Regional Railways with a TOPS number on the other.

The same goes for fantasy/what might-have-been liveries: a Deltic in InterCity or even Virgin! A 50 in CrossCountry. Go wild.

I think one of the 322s, whilst in FNW livery, only had the gold stars applied on one side. Can't remember which one though.

A loco with different numbers on each side has been done before - 37351 appeared at an East Lancs diesel gala with its origional TOPS number (37002) applied to one side. Also 50031 + 50049 worked a railtour with the numbers 50012 and 50028 on one side while keeping their real numbers on the other side

I have stopped going out to photo railtours as I am lucky to get an all Maroon, Blood and Custard, Blue, Green or whatever other matching set. Its is always a mix of them all..

Agreed, mixed livery carriage rakes were a regular feature of British Railways operations. However it is cringeworthy from a photographers' point of view to see, say, "Princess Elizabeth" in her full crimson lake glory at the head of a rake of BR Green, or even Riviera blue/cream mark 2s, or even worse with a rake of air con mark 2s in Virgin livery!

Some little tinker in 2005 pulled the (last bits of) the tatty, loose blue Transpennine vinyls off one side of 158 750 to return it back to it's former BR RRNE Express colours.

I was thinking about split liveries recently, in relation to support coaches that travel with mainline steam locos. If you had a support coach painted, say, BR maroon on one side and BR Western Region chocolate and cream on the other, it would have more chance of matching the rest of the train on one side, although that would mean it could never match the whole train on both sides!

There's some coaches at Barrow Hill that are (IRRC) blue & grey on one side and maroon ont he other

205009 is indeed dark green on the passenger side and faded Connex livery on the other side. It is time rather than money that has prevented a full repaint, as it is the regular motive power at the Eden Valley Railway.

Surprised nobody's mentioned the lined BR black which was applied to half of City of Truro a few years back as a April Fools joke for one of the mags.....

It looked good though, but the GW fans did get in a bit of a tizz about it......
