Split annual ticket

I heard that it is possible to split an annual train ticket from Congleton to Manchester by having a season ticket from Congleton to Bramhall and then having a GMPTE annual traincard from Bramhall to Manchester (covering all Greater Manchester stations).

Some of the trains don't stop in Bramhall but I was advised that section 19(c) of the conditions of carriage apply (since one ticket is a season ticket and the other is a GMPTE traincard) and section 19(b) doesn't and that you can use any train that starts in Congleton and ends up in Greater Manchester regardless of where the trains stops on the way.

Is there anyone that can confirm if this is correct as I would hate to get an annual ticket that wasn't valid.

I believe that is a correct assessment. For the purposes of condition 19c, a season ticket issued by or on behalf of a Passenger Transport Executive can be combined with a season ticket not so issued, with no requirement for the train to stop at the changeover point.

It only applies to 1 train a day anyway and as nice as I'm sure it would be to use this service if necessary would this really be a massive factor if there is a large saving to be had between the two tickets?

Unless you are going to travel on the XC 0703 everyday?

The GMPTE traincard is very useful for travelling in other parts of Greater Manchester and also for using central Manchester trams so would be good to have if valid for the main journey (which you have confirmed it is).

If using a train that doesn't stop in Bramhall do you think it would be advisable to have a printed copy of section 19(c) of the conditions of carriage just in case anyone queried the ticket?

Yes, possibly.

Of more use however would be to have a proper read of the conditions of the PTE ticket. Certain other PTE tickets seek to prohibit one from combining in this way (whether this is enforceable or not is another matter).

I'm not familiar with the GM one so I'll leave comment to others.

There is no restriction on the GMPTE products in regards to split ticketing.
