For us travelling to Wolves 3 coaches were laid on at BHM and we arrived at Wolves at 01.20 so not that bad in the end.

As for the cheers for the removal of the 57 this would have been from a few sad people who tried to get it taken off the schedule in the first place because they had had some haulage from it previously, most people seemed to be ok with it.

The tour was great helped by the staff from Spitfire who all worked hard and were easy to talk to with information being supplied as and when it was available.

Isn't it the whole point of these type of tours though? You request a specific type of loco and you get what's available - one man's dud is another man's winner, so why should that analogy sway what's powering the tour?

As I said before, what would've happened if a much-needed 37 was taken off which all but a few people need?

Why are they "sad" though? Everyone is entitled to their opinions and preferences. Some people like 57s and some don't, but that doesn't determine if someone is "sad" or not. The reaction from just about everyone was of understanding and accepting what happened and making the most of it, and not complaining.

If someone doesn't like something, why would they go on a train which advertises it? It would be like going to a steakhouse if you're a veggie! Perhaps some people were more happy becuase it bowled out their mates who required it!

Maybe because they like the rest of the itinerary? I don't know, I didn't ask them, so we can only speculate.

Very true there was a 66 on it, i bet many on the tour didn`t like them yet they showed up for the 20,37,57 etc, they stick 66`s/67`s on a few tours where 40`s,37`s join later so people will show for that one

As ever, I am in agreement with you.

My guess is that it was either that, or they may not like anything that isn't EE so it meant more 37 mileage. Wonder if it was the latter they weren't around when 37s were rostered onto normal passenger trains and are using 37-hauled railtours to catch up on mileage.......

Hmm. I'm not totally convinced, I've done plenty of moves that have involved something I don't rate as a means to an end, if it was a choice between sitting at home of having 100 miles of 'rancid' and 200 miles of 'rateable' and it still looked like a good day out I'd do it. And if/when there was a chance of getting more 'rateable' miles than 'rancid' than planned because of whatever farce I'd be quite happy.

I don't particularly like 47s, but I had 786 to Ayr the other week and the GCR(N) one recently as it was top/tail with 25279 - I'm not going to avoid them all together and miss out on other things, but equally had either of them burst and the other engine had more miles I'd have been most happy, which is exactly what happened on the Spitfire so I don't really see the problem.

And those that have had 57007 already would probably have logged 10 miles at 25mph on a pres line. Whoop-de-do! Proper main men:roll: I also notice with interest that the main protagonists of the frothing session on the e-mail lists on Saturday were the very same veg who whip themselves up into a gibbering stupor when a red 66 passes Nottingham on a run of the mill scheduled freight! The whole notion of ripping the 57 because it had already worked a couple of trains on a pres line was frankly ridiculous and for there to be a bombardment of e-mails on the subject of whether those on the train would rather a 66 worked was beyond ridiculous.

Although I wasn't on the tour, a fair few of my friends were and they all enjoyed themselves despite the various farces in the evening so I'd say the Spitfire guys deserve a pat on the back!

As per the post on wnxx Yesterday...
I'd like to post our thanks to all those who made this tour happen and the subsequent alterations that became necessary during the day, thanks to DRS (for providing the locomotives and a Driver for the additional locomotive move), WCRC (for being TOC, providing excellent train crew for us, providing a loco + staff to prep it at the last minute to help out and finally arranging the road coaches to get us back to Wolverhampton which worked out very well), Network Rail (for the timing set, then subsequent alterations and the staff at New St who were there to direct us all to the vehicles) and Gravy Train catering (for keeping us all fed and watered).

As for the final thank you, this goes to everybody onboard, who without, this tour would not have taken place.

As per a text message received on Saturday night from a tour participant read, "you didn't invent the railtour farce, these things happen, thanks for the day.". Which is very true, not heard of a tour going so spectacularly not to plan for some time now. For the record everybody onboard to Wolverhampton were transferred to road coaches which were waiting for us upon arrival at New St, culminating in a 110minute late arrival at the final destination of Wolverhampton, which considering the events that took place, I think isn't too bad!.
