Hiya,

Can anyone tell me how long the current speed restrictions at Cheshunt are going to last? My trains (SAW-LST) hasn't been on-time all week, which is quite unusual.

Thanks,

Richard

There are quite a lot of speed restrictions along there at present. The worst is the 20mph emergency restriction from Cheshunt Junction through the station to just past Windmill Lane crossing for trains heading out of London.

I guess the restrictions will remain in place for as long as it takes Nitwit Rail to sort out the track through the station, and I'm afraid I don't know when that is likely to be. It's always been bad there for as long as I can remember.

However, one of the restrictions has gone this week. There were two 50mph restrictions between Broxbourne and Cheshunt for trains heading towards London, a very short one and then a really long one before a 60mph restriction through Cheshunt station itself. The really long 50mph restriction has now gone so we now have to slow down briefly for the short one and can then speed up again before braking for Cheshunt. Of course, these affect stopping services less than the Stansted Express as you can treat Cheshunt as normal.

I've only worked three days so far this week and am still unsure about the new timetable. It does seem vulnerable to delay caused by incidents. On Monday morning there were signal problems at Clapton and this morning someone ran across Windmill Lane crossing in front of a train causing the driver to use the emergency brake and other trains to be cautioned. Both of these incidents appear to have caused an amount of delay that wasn't recovered until the peak was over.

Thank you - a very detailed reply! Is there also a restriction going North just out of Broxbourne? My train last night travelled for about 2 minutes at 15-20 MPH. I didn't think there could be any congestion at 2230..

As for the new timetable, I'll reserve judgement for now. I'm not convinced that NXEA is able to depart two trains ex-LST at 1737 and 1739. The latter routinely departs at 1742, after what seems to be an arrival on platform 1-3 (difficult to know which one).

Thanks again

No, there's nothing north of Broxbourne. However, I believe there was a fatality at Harlow Mill yesterday evening so services would have been disrupted. You might have been caught up behind a Hertford East train while it was turning the corner off the mainline.

It's perfectly possible...assuming everything's running to time, or one train goes on the Down Suburban and the other on the Down Main. ;)

Cheers,

A 2 minute interval is perfectly normal, even along the same lines. It happened for years under the old timetable with the XX10 and XX40 StanEx, and the XX12 and XX42 HFE.
