OK, so how you drive on yellows depends mainly on judgment, experience, location. How is this affected (if at all) by TPWS?

Tpws only affects approaches to reds, nothing to do with yellows. As long as you approach a red sensibly tpws dosnt make any differences.

Even with tpws+ which involves yellows to an extent it shouldn't make to much difference to how you drive.

In most places I will ensure I am under 45mph at the tpws grids approaching a red, at least on the mainlines. But as I say, that dosnt affect yellows so that is, as you say, down to judgment.

Whatever happened to Signal Repeating AWS (SRAWS) that was got working on both train and trackside between Southampton and Bournemouth 30 years ago ? It seemed to cover many of the issues raised here.

Looks like that was internal politics and 'not invented here syndrome' rather than anything else.

Once the GWR, with their own AWS system installed 50 years before elsewhere, started putting in 4-aspect signals, they also devised a system where their own equipment gave a different indication at a double yellow, with a double hoot, which I believe was done by energising the ramp at opposite polarity. That went as well once others got their hands on the upper management. http://www.baldric.plus.com/didcot/maps/atc.htm
