Speed and time test - Assessment Centre for Signaller

Hi all,

After tearing my hair out for years, I was finally accepted for an assessment last year at the Assessment Centre for a Signaller position. I passed all modules but narrowly missed out on the Speed and Time test due to my relatively poorer grasp in maths, compared to the other test.

However, a year later, I have been invited once again, only to retake that element of the Assessment. I want to be more prepared this time.

I understand that the test had a similar diagram as was shown in the example booklet. I just wanted to know what resources you'd recommend so I can tackle this element of the assessment? There are many videos and tutorials on Youtube but all are deviating from what Network Rail assessed me on from the diagram.

Would humbly appreciate any positive direction.

The diagram in the assessment book is a good start, but they do extend it further. Think about more examples and get used to doing them swiftly. Ensure that you are fully OK with 24hr clock, and that you read the question. Its easy to put a duration (say of 2 hrs) rather that a time of arrival.

bear in mind also that the answers will all be whole numbers. If you start to get into fractions, stop and read again.

A good grasp of the times tables will really help for rapid multiplication and division.

If you can, grab an appropriate maths GCSE text book or worksheet and just practice the same sort of questions. Make your own, or have a friend do so.

Does anyone know if we can use a calculator for the speed and time test?

I couldn't remember if we were allowed or not.

You cannot.

And while these specific arithmetical questions aren't relevent to the job (we don't really know how fast the trains are going!) You do a lot of calculations in your head on the fly for the purposes of train regulation.
