To prevent myself from contaminating the Middlesbrough thread in the Infrastructure and Stations section I thought should create one here in Speculative Ideas for anybody who likes to speculate on what's possible.

My ideal regarding Middlesborough

Following on this plan/idea of creating a new platform on the Northern side of the freight lines, why not just build over the old bay platform and up to freight line on the South side ? Judging by Google Maps you could squeeze a 205m platform in comfortably without having to realign the track.

Another idea is to put the through road back in, extend platform 2 Easterwards and build it out over the existing line so that the West side could be made into a West facing turnback.

Also considering the original canopy would look rather silly I would dismantle it and re-erect in on platform 1 & 2 where the 1950s/60 concrete canopy is now.

As this is speculation, how about a cheaper turnabout platform just out of town on either of the Saltburn and Nunthorpe Lines (perhaps named North Yorkshire Parkway?), so that trains terminating in Middlesbrough today instead drive on for a few more miles and provide a cross town express with connecting carpark and bus routes, freeing up space at the main station?
