How can you ‘green light’ it if you don’t know a) what you are green lighting and b) how much it is going to cost?
Well the first green light would be to work that out! That’s why it takes long enough that you don’t need to worry when Bristol East will be finished (I assume that has a frozen spec by now??)

Ah, well that’s a different green light. And of course only a green light to the next set of traffic lights, ie to do the working out. But hopefully that will come soon.

And yes the scope of Bristol East is long since frozen, albeit design is ongoing (and yes, it is electrification compatible).

I presume it’s a relatively easy stage as the work was done previously - just a case of dusting off the file and checking none of the assumptions have changed? Or is the GW metalwork so disgraced as a concept that it all needs reworking for the later/better versions?
Does it need any new feeds or other such long lead items?

I’m not sure the work has been done previously, at least not in detail. I may be wrong. In any event, it would certainly need a full design review.

It shouldn’t do, the long-standing information about grid feeder locations (in the main GW wiring thread somewhere) explained that the Thingley Junction feeder will basically cover the route via Bath and as far as Bristol Temple Meads. I don’t think there was any detail about the normal electrification boundary location in the Bristol area, ie where the separation between Thingley and Cardiff would be.

Did all the overbridges get fixed during the quadrupling?

It'll need a significant design review in any case thanks to the sale of 'surplus' electrification steelwork and the drift from Series 1 to UK Master Series (specifically the upgraded Series 2 system).

What was going to hold up the wires previously almost certainly won't be what is going to hold them up in the future. I say that as a Series 1 fan, but as the mantra remains mechanically independent registration, I can certainly live with that.
