Ascott-under-Wychwood station on the Cotswold Line gets some extra calls on Saturdays in the run-up to Christmas again this year, starting this Saturday and continuing until December 17.

The following trains will stop at Ascott-under-Wychwood station on Saturdays November 26 and December 3, 10 and 17:

The 7.10 am from Hereford to London Paddington will call at 9 am. The train is due to arrive in Oxford at 9.25 am and London at 10.25am.
The 11.21 am from London to Worcester and Great Malvern, which leaves Oxford at 12.23 pm, will call at Ascott at 12.48 pm
The 3.21 pm from London to Great Malvern (4.23 pm from Oxford) will call at Ascott at 4.45 pm.
In addition, on November 26 only, the 5.49 pm from Great Malvern to London (6.02 pm from Worcester Foregate Street station) will call at Ascott at 6.59 pm, allowing people to enjoy an afternoon out at Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre by catching the 12.48 pm departure from Ascott, which reaches Worcester Foregate Street at 1.44 pm.

Sounds interesting, I can understand Finstock & Coombe having one train a day in each direction because there is nothing around the station, but Ascott looked to be a largish village.

It's not massive, about 500 people, but the station is in the village and the number of passengers using the weekday train has increased in the past couple of years. Can be 10 or a dozen, so much the same as at Shipton, which serves a much bigger population.

In the case of both stations, a few additional stops spread through the day and a regular Saturday service for Ascott would probably increase passenger numbers - and ease the pressure on parking at Charlbury and Kingham, as villagers drive to both places for the better services on offer.

Good to see this happening again this year. I'd like to see a permanent modest improvement in Ascott's train service; I'm sure its excellent location in the village makes it much more likely to succeed than the poorly sited halts at Combe & Finstock.

But William, whatever happened to the 24-hour clock!
