Yes, I’d say just ask your friends to consult the webpage I sent a buy the cheapest title on offer at their newsagent.
The most readily available will be the Yorkshire Post (not a bad paper in relative terms) or the Manchester Evening News. The latter will be cheaper. The other titles are specific to the towns they serve.

You need to buy the ticket from a Northern ticket office. The easiest thing is just to buy the papers when you need the ticket. Buy the papers. Cut out the tokens and take the form to the ticket office.
