Your other handy link suggests a fair few will still be in the papers until 22 March so I guess time yet to get the vouchers - if I understand the list correctly.

Question.

I have just looked at the map and was alarmed to discover how few lines are actually Northern operated. Only the pink lines according to the map key. Seems all the PTE (or whatever they are called nowadays) are excluded. But I am inclined to believe it is all the solid coloured lines, or at least many of them.
Is it all of them or just some ?.

It's the whole Northern network.

As Rail Ranger said, anything Northern operated.

No you don't. You can buy the ticket at any station with a ticket office that is served by Northern. I bought the £12 day tickets from Manchester Piccadilly ticket office last week (that ticket office is run by Avanti).

Apologies. Northern do have a ticket office at Piccadilly. It is under the departure board. Unless that changed recently Piccadilly is a station with a Northern ticket office, even if they do not man the travel centre.

I think it means all the coloured thick lines are Northern - and the thins ones that are Merseyrail as we know are not - but how long would it take someone not in the know to understand that....

As it happens I've previously bought them at an EMR ticket office where a Northern Service calls. They had no issue with it so suspect the Northern Ranger is listed in the ticket database and any ticket office can hopefully do it - just need a member of staff who knows where to find it on the ticket issuing system.

No problem. I wasn’t precise enough. I think any station served by Northern will sell the tickets. Manchester Piccadilly, Nottingham (EMR) Newcastle (LNER) for example.

I was just trying to point out that the places which sell the newspapers are likely to sell the ticket.

Need legal certainty to here or get pounced on! Yorkshire Post might be available at King Cross for example

Yes. The token just says ‘Winter Offer 2026’. The point of the scheme is to increase circulation of newspapers.

I've done that in the past - went to the nearest newsagent that stocked copies of the paper with the vouchers in it and bought every copy of the local paper he had in stock the day I went in - which was about only 10 copies. As the previous year I'd noticed the vouchers were exactly the same in the paper one week to the next - tho this was a few years ago now admittedly.

Maybe someone could upload image(s) of the voucher ads from a local paper(S) on here for others to see (obv you need the actual vouchers from a real paper to get the tickets).

Thanks - I know what you mean but you do sometimes need certainty with some hesitant ticket office staff who might not have seen the vouchers before...

It used to be that the tokens didn't have the specific run on them either, so I could keep a stock of tokens and use them whenever the next promotion came along. Now they're labelled with "Winter Offer 2026" as mentioned above.

Northern still update the old style map, it's just under "Download the basic network map" a couple rows down the page.
The old style is just blue = Northern, gray = Not Northern

The tokens might be a different colour depending on whether they are Reach (two tokens per ticket) or National World (three tokens per ticket). That’s the only difference. They are not date stamped.

The good news is the offer seems to work for both parties. It’s been going for years. Use it or lose it.

It's too late for the current offer as the last day was yesterday, but these tokens are also always in the Sunday Mirror and the "Northern" edition is the issue that is issued as far down into the Midlands as Worcestershire.

So good for collecting them down here, but not much use for travel unless you're planning a trip into Northern's operating area!

Yes, I’m afraid the Northern Rail rover ticket is only useful on Northern Rail services. My guess is it is to boost passengers during off peak when demand is low. Hence the dates the offer is available.

Generally speaking the morning peaks does tend to be busier than the afternoon peak. Commuters don't come home at the same time

I’m sure that’s very true. Tho iirc some years ago Northern introduced an evening peak restriction on services that it was able to do so for.

I assume you are referring to some papers no longer having tokens ?.
I think the actual offer is valid up to 27/03/2026 - four weeks to go ?.
Or are there complexities I am missing.

Gulp only four weeks to get an idea/excuse in my friends head.

Libraries can be very helpful if you've missed a coupon. In my experience they keep hold of newspapers for a little while after but you may have to ask a librarian to get it out for you.

Of course the ethics of cutting a token out of a newspaper in a public library are a different matter.

But…
If these images of the actual adverts in the paper say they have made an error and claim the day ranger version ends on 22 March not 27th. See the small print. Or am i missing something?

Interestingly this Iconic token from yesterday doesn’t say that.
It says collect by 22 March.
But not ‘spend by…’ or ‘travel by’
So I wonder if the vouchers could be used in a future round of the offer?

The Iconic tokens might be a different colour next time, but worth keeping if you don’t use them this time.

I live in a Reach area, but I will buy Yorkshire Post next week at Piccadilly; now the Reach tokens have finished.
