Trainsplit has a (limited in quantity) offer of £10 off for the purchase of selected Digital Railcards - these being the 16-25 Railcard, 16-17 Saver and 26-30 Railcard - in a promotion aimed at students heading (back) to university, so bringing the price down from £35 to £25:
rail.cards/uni-2025-sale

(Note - though it's only relevant to the 16-25 Railcard - the £10 off discount appears to only be offered for the 1-year Railcard, and not the 3-year version.)
Seems I got that wrong! See the next post...

I used a Northern £12 day ticket successfully on TPE between Carlisle and Lancaster on Tuesday this week. The conductor was fine with it. Bransty tunnel is now official closed until next spring: BBC News - Bransty railway tunnel closed until spring 2026 - BBC News

I used one of the £12 day tickets today from Newcastle to Blackpool North and as the ticket office was closed at Newcastle at 0610 this morning, I asked the guard on the Carlisle train if I could buy on board with the vouchers. He issued said ticket, but didn't take the vouchers as he said they would just go in the bin.

Due to disruption on the Cumbrian coast, TPE and Avanti were accepting tickets between Carlisle and Lancaster. When my ticket was scanned on board the TPE service the guard asked where I was going. I told him Blackpool and he said to stay on until Preston.

The ticket didn't work the barriers at Blackpool North both inward or return.

Coming back, changing at Preston, I asked the Scottish TM on the platform if I could use it on the Avanti WC train to Carlisle and she said to just get on.

At Carlisle there was further disruption due to an unfortunate event on an incoming service from Newcastle (the train went ECS back to Newcastle nearly an hour late) so I asked Northern Customer Services if it was permitted to use the diverted LNER train and they said yes so got that back.

Arrived into Newcastle nearly 66 minutes later than I should have done, and was told by Northern CS to submit a delay replay claim. I did so and had it automatically accepted and a full refund has been issued for the ticket.

All in all, a good day out. (Bit of a moan that the wraps on the Blackpool Trams is horrific and you can hardly see out of the window!)

Was it printed as a pseudo e-ticket?
I've only ever had them as card sized tickets.

I also used one today (Wigan to Manchester via Bentham, Doncaster and Kiveton Park)

In case you have the same issue as me - the code wasn't visible on my desktop email, but was on mobile.
Not visible on mobile or anywhere else. I phoned LNW Customer Services and was told there was nothing they could do, also said they have received a lot of calls with people suffering the same problem as me.

Disappointed as i need to be in Liverpool in a couple of weeks, I'll just split using EMR.

I resubscribed to communications without being asked. They sent me an email asking me to confirm it was me who wanted back in and that was the last i heard from them.. I checked junk but it was empty.

I found that the relevant page was yet another that wouldn't display properly on Firefox (Windows 11 PC), so opened it in Edge instead with no problems. I also got the "resubscribe" email and soon after confirming, the email with the code arrived.

Even if you get your code and select your journeys, the "Continue to payment" button doesn't work, so it's all a complete waste of time :s

Not sure if this is correct place to post, but appears the Bakerloop (London bakerloo line extension by buses) Waterloo - Lewisham is going to be free for its first week on pay as you go

Virgin Trains Ticketing has a special offer if you're cashing in Virgin Red points for train tickets.

Spend 5000 points (= £25 worth of tickets) and get 1000 points back. Offer valid until 9 October or 1000 customers.

Redeeming your points for train tickets isn't great value to start with, but if you're going to do it anyway, an extra 1000 points doesn't hurt.

Link to Headforpoints blog article on the deal: https://www.headforpoints.com/2025/09/26/save-1000-virgin-points-on-virgin-trains/

It has it's own thread, but probably worth a mention here that Northern have expanded the GPS ticket trial with £15 of free credit available for the certain lines involved.
DfT Press Release, new Northern digital ticket with £15 free travel

Harrogate to Leeds now
Sheffield-Doncaster from 27 October
Sheffield-Barnsley from 24 November

Passengers in the North are the latest to benefit from simplified train tickets, with the further rollout of digital trials.
From today (29 September 2025), rail passengers travelling on Northern trains between Harrogate and Leeds will find it even easier to take the train over the Arthington Viaduct to visit Kirkstall Abbey, get to and from work in Leeds city centre or play a round at Pannal Golf Club.
The simplified system makes it as easy as hopping on a train and pressing a button on your phone to start your journey, removing the need to pre-book tickets and worrying about paying higher prices through third-party apps.
Technology in passengers’ phones will be able to register when they get off the train automatically, and they’ll be charged the lowest possible fare at the end of the day.
Sign up to Northern Train’s digital ticketing trial.
For ticket inspections and to go through ticket barriers, a unique bar code will pop up in the app to be scanned.
Passengers who try the apps will also get £15 worth of free travel thanks to government backing of the trial, with credit automatically added to their account.
In a further boost for train users in the North, more trials will launch on the Sheffield – Doncaster and Sheffield – Barnsley routes run by Northern, on 27 October 2025 and 24 November 2025 respectively.
By making it easier to choose rail, the scheme hopes to put money in people’s pockets by helping them get the cheapest fares on the day of travel, make it easier to access work and as a result boost growth, as part of the Plan for Change.
Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy, said:
We’re bringing ticketing into the 21st century. These trials are modernising fares and ticketing, making it simpler and easier for people to choose rail.
As part of our Plan for Change, we’re delivering straightforward, stress-free train travel across the North, supporting passengers and boosting economic growth, jobs and homes.
Passengers can still make the most of simpler and more flexible train travel and a guarantee of the best value fare on the day, by simply signing up for the trials via Northern’s website.
Passengers taking part in East Midlands Rail’s trial of the technology have said it made train travel feel ‘simple and trustworthy’ and another added that it meant ‘little to no worrying about being overcharged’, which was a ‘big shift from how I normally feel about train transport, which can sometimes feel complicated or inconvenient’.
It comes as the government is delivering the biggest overhaul of the railways in a generation through the creation of Great British Railways, which will help to deliver better and more reliable services for passengers.
Backed by nearly £1 million of government funding, the trials are part of plans to modernise our transport system, putting passenger experience at the heart of every journey and encouraging more people to take the train – building on the government’s mission to deliver growth.
