Buy the Railcard from Trainline for the 7% cashback, then just don't buy tickets from them?

Indeed, I can confirm LNER does have a 2 hour grace period for cancellations. If paper tickets were selected these may need to be collected and posted back (after completing the collection form online within the 2 hours).

Changes to Services Between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness

Due to emergency engineering works, the railway between Corkickle and Whitehaven is currently closed until further notice.

A rail replacement bus service is operating to help you complete your journey. However, please note:

• Nethertown and Braystones stations are not served by rail replacement buses, the closest stations are Sellafield or St Bees.
• Train and bus times may vary throughout the day and will take longer than the train – you can plan your journey on the Northern Journey Planner or through National Rail before you travel.

Ticket acceptance

You can use your ticket on Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express services between Lancaster and Carlisle at no extra cost.

Northern ticket restrictions have been lifted during this disruption so that you may travel via any reasonable route.

Additionally, if the train you have a ticket for is cancelled, you can travel on any Northern or TransPennine Express service within two hours before or after your cancelled service was due to depart. This is at no extra cost, and does not require you to amend your ticket.

Unfortunately AFAIK ever since this offer first started in about (I think) 2016 Northern has never made any kind of provision for people who would like to use the offer but who live or are staying near an unstaffed station (or a part-staffed station that they can never get to or have time to buy a ticket there when the ticket office is open).

I would guess that such people would unfortunately have to pay extra for the first leg of their journey from their local station to the nearest staffed station where they can get a £12 day or £20 weekend ticket.

I suppose the sensible thing to do would be to allow such passengers to show a used single ticket (or proof of purchase such as a receipt) from their local station, and the cost of that ticket could then be deducted from the cost of their day or weekend ticket.

Obviously, if their nearest staffed station had ticket gates, and they had a paper ticket issued on standard credit card sized ticket (CCST) stock bought from a machine, they would have to ask to be let through the gate manually so they could keep their used ticket.

It probably isn't convenient but you can buy the £12 day ticket/£20 weekend ticket up to three days in advance if you happen to be at a staffed station during that period.

For the newspaper offer, I’ve never done it, but I always assumed that it would be acceptable to get “Promise to Pay” ticket from from the TVM at an unmanned station, and then pay (in cash is probably safer) at the first manned ticket office that you pass on your journey. Best have your form filled on and £12 cash in hand and show, along with the P2P, to the guard or any ticket inspectors you meet in the train. Surely nobody is going to pull you up for that? Or am I being naively optimistic?

Cash safer for sure, but if the ticket you want isn't available from the machine, common sense (yes I know) suggests that card payment should be fine.
