Hmmm... this debate seems to rumble on and on without ever getting clear. I won't pretend I have what I would call a sound understanding of it, but here goes...

I don't have an NUS Extra card... but my Student Union is a 'member' of the NUS, in the sense that we send them delegates and stuff. As such, my University ID card has an NUS logo on it, and that's the reason I don't have an NUS Extra card, most places will accept this. For specific promotions such as the XC one above, an NUS Extra card is required, which you have to pay for... but I have no notion that the two are actually linked.

Condition 2 in the Ts and Cs of NUS Extra may be helpful:

In order to purchase the NUS extra Card you must be aged 16 or over and be in part or full time education. Certain exceptions apply.

People got them at my Sixth Form, which obviously had no semblance of a student union!

My University Guild was not a member of the NUS; it held a referendum a few years before I started and the majority voted to leave. I don't recall any shops rejecting my University ID card, although as stated above there are a few online promotions you are not eligible for.

If your institution is not in the NUS, then you cannot apply to purchase an NUS Extra card.

I refused to buy an NUS Extra initially last academic year on principle. I only got one because I needed to get a discount off a purchase, and the discount was bigger than the cost of the card.

XC don't print the discount on the ticket (not on standard stock anyway - not sure about E-tickets as I never use them) with their regular 10% off ones.

Absolutely no different to discounts negotiated by say Trade Unions for their members - don't bleat if you can't get the discount because you are not a member! If your Guild voted not to be in NUS don't whinge that you can't get discounts negotiated by that body!

As far as I know (judging by the campaigning for the annual NUS vote our student union has, which invariably turns out to be "no"), it costs far too much and doesn't really give you anything our union can't do already, with the exception of the NUS Extra card.

Yes I received this e-mail too, its only on the London route though, not on any ticket purchase.

Correct, my ticket cost me £19.10 the other day, but when the PDF came through with the actual ticket it said £25.50 (normal Adult price) and there is nothing in the PDF to state NUS Extra.

I have one, and so far it has been of little use as I dislike Grand Central and I don't tend to travel with XC.

The only reason I have the NUS extra is for Spotify because I can get it for £5 instead of the usual £10
