The offers have often started with that restriction before, but it often ends up getting removed half way through the offer. And one occasion in the past the offer was advertised as only being available to purchase in advance, but TVMs were selling it on the day anyway.

I was about to book this on the SWT site, but the booking process made it seem like I was booking specific trains, which I hadn't expected, so I backed out. They call the ticket "Advance Off Peak Day Return", a description I find a little confusing. Can I treat it like a normal SWT Off Peak or is it an Advance fare?

It's like a normal off-peak day return, except valid on SWT services only.

You can travel on any train (subject to peak time restrictions Monday-Friday) and break of journey is allowed.

The "Advance" refers to the rule requiring you to purchase it before the day of travel.

(Previous incarnations of this promotion allowed purchases from ticket machines on the day of travel. And it used to be £12.00!)

Be aware that the restrictions are those that apply to Super-Offpeak Day returns, ie you cannot catch a weekday train back from Waterloo between 16.00 and 19.00. That restriction is one reason why I never buy Super-Offpeak Day Returns from Basingstoke in the week. The saving (60p) with a Railcard is just not worth the significant loss of flexibility.

Does that mean less people use the west of England line at this time compared to in the autumn?

It's neither Offpeak not Super Offpeak, because it has the evening restrictions as you say, but not the much later morning start time. Anyway, this one was for weekend travel. I think the reason they make you specify a particular train for both outward and return journeys during the booking process is to ensure that you intend to travel during the valid period, but it makes you feel as if you are buying an inflexible Advance ticket.

I used it to Exeter on Sunday and Monday and the 0946 was 3 coaches throughout on Sunday and was busy throughout without being full. Even the 1525 return on Monday (3 coaches) was only full and standing to Axminster, as usual, then loads of space until Basingstoke. Devon Metro is most definitely needed as you only need 6 coaches from Exeter to Axminster out of summer so using 6 the whole way is a poor use of resources...though it does make the journey more pleasant!

South West Trains Offer

I was trying to book Richmond (RMD) to Bradford on Avon (BOA)on Sat 5th March but couldn't get the £15 offer on the SWT Web Site.
However, the offer did come up if I booked Clapham Junction (CLJ) to Bradford on Avon (BOA).

Rang SWT telesales and was told RMD to BOA was a valid route, and to tell the ticket office staff to use "Fares Only" as this would give the £15 fare.

This may also apply to other station combinations.

Don't take the promotion T&Cs too literally; on East Coast it seems that even though it's called "Visit England" there are fares to/from Scotland to be found! (They're denoted by a Maltese cross next to the fare)

Excellent. The offers seem to be coming quite frequently with Virgin so it helps to make up for the loss of Rewards. Stocked up on 6 weeks of tickets but May not availble yet on my line.

Like I said, don't take the T&Cs of the promotion too literally. As others have said, you can book day trips despite the "minimum 2 night stay" condition.

And while there are no through fares to Newcastle, Darlington and Durham from London, they are available from intermediate stations like Doncaster so you could split your advance tickets there.

I'm coming South ie from Edinburgh / Falkirk ....

One great deal I have noticed from Falkirk to Berwick upon Tweed for £10 each way 1st Class....

Could have access to the Edinburgh Lounge, Breakfast on the way down, Access to the Berwick Lounge and a drink/snack on the way back all for £20.

It isn't easy to make sense of the latest news release from Virgin Trains East Coast, but it seems that tickets on the extra trains they will be running from the May timetable change go on sale this Friday (19th February), and that from 19th February to 3rd March there will be additional £25 tickets on sale for Edinburgh/Kings X.

Just had en email from Virgin East Coast:

from 16 May we'll be increasing our services leaving Edinburgh for London to 25 each weekday. TWENTY-FIVE. That's one almost every half hour!

We’ll also have more services from London to Edinburgh - 23 per weekday. That's a whopping 48 services a day between our two great capital cities.

So to celebrate we're offering 50,000 Standard Advance fares along the route for a mere £25 (see what we did there?). And with a swift journey time from just 4 hours; a city centre arrival; and no checking-in hassle, it certainly beats flying.

Simply book by 4 March 2016 and travel on any weekday between 16 May - 15 July 2016 to enjoy these celebratory prices. When they're gone, they're gone - so snap them up quick!

MasterCard Free Travel Mondays (includes cable car, excludes boats) is back again in London today and also next Monday and the Monday following. Free travel up to a maximum of £28.10 per day if you use Apple Pay with a linked MasterCard, looks to be similar terms as last time: http://www.mastercard.co.uk/applepay-fare-free-monday.html

It's a very good offer for non-Railcard holders, but it's a shame that Railcard discounts still don't apply, because Railcard-discounted tickets are, once again, usually cheaper, or around the same price as, the sale fares.
