Just a quick question, when a TSR has been SPATED and the associated SPATE board is in place...

A) How long does the board need to stay there?
B) Why does the magnet need to remain in situ?

A - Until the ESR has been published at the Depots working the affected line/route ;
B - The magnet is the backup to the EROS and any warning board has to have a magnet in position with it

OT,

Forgive me for questioning your answer, but the actions you suggest seem more connected with imposing an ESR rather than withdrawing a TSR 'early'! If the TSR is lifted before the published time, and SPATE boards installed, wouldn't they remain in place until the published time for the lifting of the TSR?

Yes sorry, perhaps I didn't compose my initial post good enough. When a TSR as been terminated early, how long does the SPATE board need to stay in place before it can be removed? (and I notice Tomnick's answer which seems logical)

Also, why does the magnet need to stay in place when a speed as been terminated early?

Back in late 2000/early 2001 when there were TSRs everywhere I remember having a conversation with a local manager:

If a speed restriction were to be imposed as a result of having detected gauge corner cracking then this would have the usual warning, commencement and termination boards and also an EROS or Dalek 200 yards before the warning board. Once this was published in the weekly notices the Dalek would then be removed. When the repairs were complete if the TSR was still showing in the weekly notices then spate boards would be used for warning and commencement. The spate boards would be removed once the speed restriction was removed from the weekly notices or it was beyond the time that it was stated in the weekly notices that the speed restriction would be removed.

Not at all Old Chap !

Quite right to do so.

It must be old age, for some reason I read EROS

And not a drop of wine at that time either !

I was distracted though by a most delightful young woman serving drinks at the time, although OT was only partaking of orange juice !

Yes, YOU are of course quite correct and I am in error. I do apologise, and thank you for drawing this to my attention.

The TSR remains in position until the published time or the end of the WON period.

So, just to confirm, the SPATE boards remain until either the published time of the restriction has been reached, or it has been put in the WON that it has been withdrawn?

GB, the misunderstanding was mine. I do apologise.

The TSR boards remain in place but with the speed(s) spated, until the published withdrawal time. This will either be shown in the WON on a specific day, or will end at the end of the WON notice week.

The reason that the magnet remains in place is simply that it forms part of the TSR equipment and in poor visibility will draw the Drivers attention to it.

It is spated following Recomendations from the 1975 Nuneaton derailment. At that time the TSR boards were removed, but it was realised that their removal could mask a failed warning board, as was the cause, when a Driver assumed the TSR had been withdrawn earlier than published.

After that the TSR remained in place, albeit with a new raised speed displayed, and in later years the "Spate" board was introduced.

I didn't think an ESR could be spated only a TSR as an ESR is't published

It cannot. I wrongly answered as an ESR going on, rather than the TSR being spated.

Of course SPATE boards I believe are also used for Rail Heat speed restrictions but not as SPATEs, I'll have a look at my notices to confirm this.

A Heat-related ESR can be imposed and withdrawn as required.

On a renewals site we have the EROS board distances calculated and the equipment on site at this time of year. When the temperature rises the boards are erected and when the temperature cools, the EROS board and AWs magnet are removed and the TSR speed is again applicable. This is usually associated with stressing issues and temporary clamped joints.

Heat-related ESRs on normal track will remain in place until the problem is dealt with.
