Through my own lack of admin skills I have ended up booking two sets of tickets to Manchester P from Euston for this weekend.

Now the first incorrect one leaves before the one I have selected to use so that is a dead rubber.

The return leg however the duplicate is for the same train.

My heart says try and sell the single to Euston for face value.

I'm pretty sure I won't be allowed so I sit back and wait for the reason why please :D

It's not allowed because the rules on re-selling say it isn't. :D Whether that's right or not is a question that's never been settled on here.

Of course not being allowed does not stop it from happening.

The rule is that tickets can only be used by the person for whom they were purchased ie it doesn't have to be the person who paid for the ticket

In the case of corporate transactions they must be used by an employee of the firm that bought the ticket

It is not allowed to sell train tickets

I believe the likely sites where one might try to sell unwanted articles are monitored by ATOC

Even Advance tickets can be exchanged before time of travel (for fee plus difference in fare)

Did you book through Virgin? They usually seem quite good when it comes to refunding or amending tickets bought in error, so that could be worth a go.

Otherwise (assuming these are Advance tickets), you can change them for a different date and time for £10 per ticket plus any difference in fare.

Giving or selling at face value to friends or family is unlikely to raise any eyebrows, but openly advertising a sale could get you in trouble (and is also against the terms of most websites like eBay etc so you could get kicked off them).

I was considering touting at the station.

Maybe asking Virgin for a refund is the way forward, they will be able to tell they have not been used by the lack of markings?

They were only £10 each way.

Could I give them tot he guard on the way up for a first class upgrade!?

I don't think this is the wisest idea.

In all honestly, I think this is one of those occasions where you'll have to just conceed that your mixup has cost you £20, unless Virgin take pity on you and give you a discretionary refund.

Actually eBay doesn't care. I've reported auctions for reselling tickets to them before and they've sent me a form email saying they only respond to police complaints.

Virgin might give you a refund if you ask nicely, but the tickets have no value otherwise.

In that case the next step is probably to report ebay to the British Transport Police.

Your best bet I think is to get in touch with Virgin and seek their understanding on this matter. If the tickets are clearly unintended duplicates booked by mistake, they are quite good at refunding the unnecessary ticket from what I have heard.

When were they booked?

Ebay always used to delete rail ticket listings - have they changed policy ?

Not sure off the top of my head but a number of weeks a go and a few weeks apart.

As I arrived an hour before my 8.40 from Euston I thought I would go to the ticket office to ask about my spare tickets.

The chap said as I bought them on line I would have to talk to them.

This is a little frustrating, I bought them from Virgin, they are Virgin. Another railway anomaly I guess.
