Unusual sight of a pair of 66's in push-pull mode with a couple of blue network rail oil? tanks between them. Anything to do with the ECML engineering work later today?

Sounds like what they call a Railhead treatment Train; i.e. a water spray to clear leaves off the track,or stuff called Sandite to improve grip. Like one of these.

As Schnellzug says, you saw an RHTT, specifically
3J41 09:16 Peterborough to Doncaster.

In fact, you were lucky as today was the first appearance
of that train on a Saturday this year!
