Southport to London

The fastest journey from Southport to London on journey planner has always been via Wigan.

Checking for the coming week all routes are showing via Liverpool.

What’s happened I wonder. Engineering, too many delay repay/general unreliability from the northern shambles on the Southport line so it has been taken out of journey planner as a route? Seems very odd.

Southport to Wigan Wallgate replaced by buses all week due to engineering work.

Ah okay thanks, that explains it. Any idea what it is and why taking so long/using weekdays rather than weekends?

Engineering work is taking place between Meols Cop and Southport, closing all lines.

Buses replace trains between Wigan Wallgate and Southport.

They are not replacing the track, last replaced in 1664 are they!!! Presume no interest in turning them at Meols Cop.

Such a funny bit of track that. The original ‘straight route’ that I understand was lifted in favour of the tight curved route that is now used runs alongside the garden of my sister’s house. Took me ages to work out why the road changed names where it does and then the penny dropped when I thought the garden wall looked a bit ‘railway’.

Parbold Signal Box is being closed and some level crossings being worked on.

Among other things the semaphore signals between Parbold and Wigan are being replaced with colour light signals.
