Last night at Southport the train has roughly 40 minutes to wait before returning to Wigan and beyond. The Northern Rail driver and guard went out the side entrance and came back shortly before departure time. Is there a staff mess room out that way? Are there separate rooms for Northern Rail and Merseyrail employees here?

From my view of the layout of Southport station, I'd presume staff facilities would be on the side with the toilets but the abundance of shops in the forecourt probably have altered the layout over time.

From a staff point of view, I'd rather be waiting 40 minutes at Southport than at some remote terminus like Mallaig or Stranraer Harbour for possibly longer!

The Mess Room uses the space formerly occupied by the ticket office.

It has two entrances, one for the smokers with an entrance onto the car park and the other leading directly onto the space by the M2Go shop.

Both Northern & Merseyrail use it.

In steam days - allegedly - they had a strange tradition in the mess at Southport.

After dipping your teabag in your mug you would throw it to the ceiling and hope to make it stick!

The ceiling was decorated with drying teabags.

Allegedly.

Possibly a tradition transferred from the local pub in a village not too far away, Freckleton.

There, a local used to order a "salad butty, no cucumber". For a joke the landlord used to always put cucumber on it, Whereupon the local would take off the cucumber and fling it to the ceiling where it would often stick.

That is, until it dried out and fell into some unsuspecting strangers pint!

This would be in the days before TripAdvisor?

At Southport I used a teaspoon with a lid and loose leaf tea inside I would put the teaspoon in my cup, pour on boiling water and leave it to brew. Just like you use a tea bag now. Teabags not easily available at the time steam was finishing, and I cannot recall any on the ceiling at Southport, so perhaps a diesel time thing. as by then I had moved on. However ceiling covered in tea bags seen at other places.

Railway mess rooms are often hidden in very obscure locations. I use one that is an old signalbox (out of use for well over 50 years now and built into the building) and one that is in a random office building up the road from the station over a pizza shop.

The second one sounds very much like one I know of in Newcastle
