Got of at selhurst today (my local station) as I got off I had a look over the wall from platform as it looks over to the depot.

I seen what looked like a southern 4 car 313 unit. Since when did southern had 313s. Were did they get it from and what route does it use

I loved these trains when I lived in glasgow

Since about 2009—they are the ones that used to be with London Overground. They generally (but not exclusively) work the stopping services east and west of Brighton.

Also I should point out that Scotland never had 313s; it's 314s you're thinking of, and they're still in Greater Glasgow to this day.

They're ex-London Overground units (displaced by the arrival of the 378s), so by my reckoning they've been with Southern just over three-four years or so. They are found down around Brighton and the Sussex Coasts usually - specifically Brighton-Seaford and Brighton-Littlehampton trains IIRC, as well as some in between.

These are the ones that were allocated to Silverlink on privatisation and were transferred to Southern upon being displaced by London Overground. Class 378s. They were refurbished in 2010 and operate between Brighton and Seaford, select Brighton to Portsmouth Harbour services, Hove, Littlehampton, West Worthing, and the Littlehampton to Bognor Regis shuttle. I believe they very, very, very rarely even get to Hastings/Ore.

The main Southern depots are Selhurst and Lovers Walk (Brighton) IIRC - I'm not sure why a 313 would be in Selhurst as I would have assumed Brighton would be more convenient and do anything that Selhurst could. Perhaps it's owing to a lack of capacity and / or manpower at Lovers Walk?

And equally rarely to Southampton, although they're really not supposed to :P

Southern's 313s are booked to reach Ore during weekday mornings since December last year so appear there and Hastings a bit more frequently now.

I believe the 313s visit Selhurst for overhauls.

313's are three cars not four.

There were a couple in at Selhurst when I was in there on nights earlier in the month, though i've seen the odd one about during the day too.

460s no longer exist in passenger service and I'm not sure if there's even a whole set sitting somewhere. They certainly aren't going anywhere by rail in 460 form! They were the special Gatwick Express "Darth Vader" Juniper units, but they are now being transformed into a series of extra coaches to be added to the SWT 458s.

It is a great shame that the 460s, which were well-designed for suburban and airport passengers, have been replaced by 442s, which are hopelessly unreliable (they catch fire too regularly) and most unsuitable for airport shuttles (largely due to luggage space and interior layout, plus door layouts and DDA compliance).
