Providing your on a standard course you will be Monday to Thursday 9-4 and on the Friday you will do cab experience so can be any time providing it doesnt conflict with 12 hours rest. As the course progresses you will do blocks of driving days again this is shifts so will vary. Once out of the school you will be assigned an instructor and will follow there shift pattern to compete your driving hours.

The rules which takes up the first two months or so is very much classroom.based. Once you pass the Rules exam you go onto Traction which is both classroom based and practicle based in a sense that you go out and look around units, find out what everything is and does, put up some faults and failures and work them out etc.
There are a few days in the simulators dotted about here and there too including some assessments to check you have understood the underpinning knowledge, and to check your verbal communication skills too.

I am surprised that Simulators are out given the considerable financial investment in them. Any reason why they are no longer thought useful?

Perhaps those now redundant simulators could end up at the NRM or a preserved line. Could be a nice money spinner!

I have to agree with Paul, the Sims were painful to use and didn't really represent driving a real train. If you were doing 20mph it felt like you were doing about 2. Even up to 60-90 it felt like you were cruising at about 20-30.
Not to mention in my ICOC when doing the part on reduced visibility, the snow made me suffer motion sickness something I have never had before.

Presumably someone made a wheelbarrow full of cash making a not fit for purpose sim? Has all the hallmarks of s failed public sector IT project!

The simulators are still being used. For parts of the rules course you are assessed on your understanding of situations like Temporary Block Working & Single Line Working on the simulators.
They are also used a lot on traction as we've spent around 4 days on the simulators during 377 traction as well as going out to Selhurst or Streatham Hill to play with real units.
I think they are a good learning tool to a point but they aren't that true to life with regard how a train responds in real life compared to how the simulator reacts.

Mine was the following week to the medical exam. The doctor told me straight away if I passed. They didn't give me the 7 days time for the final interview (but you have 2 days option), so don't be surprised.
The MMI will be based on the questions you filled in a separate paper, the last questions was an example of a similar task as train driver. In the interview just have several examples of the role as train driver, working on your own for long periods keeping concentration, emergencies, doing repetitive tasks, etc.

It does seem to vary...
My Assessment & Structured interview was on the Monday, had my Manager interview on the Thursday, call telling me they wanted to offer me the job subject to a medical on the following Tuesday, following Tuesday my Medical, then ten days later I rang them up and was told my contract and start date had been sent in the post that day.

Hi all
Had my medical and mmi the week before last and am starting on the 3rd of March, based at London Bridge depot, so it took me roughly around 2 weeks.
Anyone here at London Bridge depot?

A while, I applied back in September 2013, as soon as I passed the assesment day though everything went very quickly
