Yes so Plat 15 can handle 12 coaches but 16/17 are only 8 and 10 respectively.
They as of September 2022 (really trying to keep relevancy! :D) only use 4 coaches still.

Although this strange website I found whilst looking for CLJ platform lengths suggests that both 16 and 17 are only 8 max.

What was the point in extending it, if most service pre Sept. Timetable change were formed of 4/5/6/7/8 coaches?
Frankly there is no point in extending the platforms in any scenario. Usually a big fat lump of money down the drain while trains are working fine enough with SDO

So this odd anomaly of a 12 coach train running metro routes has brought the life back on this thread, so does anyone know any other crazy formations that have slipped under the radar?

Seeen this evening 8 coaches from Reigate to Victoria of course no Three Bridges Portion. Can't verify it for sure but I was in the area at that time.
If this formation was real, then all I can think is that the other half of 4 coaches was stored in Redhill sidings at joined there respectively as these London Bound trains from Reigate already have long dwell time at Redhill. between 5-12 minutes I believe.

Since 8 cars can’t actually terminate at Reigate I would assume the other 4 that were mean to start at Three Bridges probably got curtailed to Redhill and the train joined up from there.

Can't have done as it wasn't a morning service and Reigate & Three Bridges from Victoria are only in the evenings.

This is off topic but I'll create a new thread elsewhere if you would like unless you would like to do it? :)

Also:

How popular has the London Bridge- Victoria service been? I have used it once at 18:00 on the day after the Queen's death and it was completely empty? It may have picked passengers up elsewhere as I only took the train to Balham.

I would love a new thread but I don’t know many other examples to include there.

Never been on it but I could imagine it being a popular service as it goes to both termini. That being said those services are 8/10 car and do even out some of the weight on the WCY and BKJ services.

Shame the London Bridge to East Croydon via Forest hill was cut. It was actually rather popular from the times I travelled on it. Although many saw East Croydon on the board and assumed it was fast to ECR but alas it was not and they were trapped on the train to ECR for half an hour.

One can still change at Norwood Junction but it is an inconvenience.

Just four coaches from Reigate on the 1811 from Redhill to London Victoria. The other four come empty from Gatwick, having worked the Gatwick portion of the southbound 1638 Victoria to Reigate / Gatwick splitter.

What did it form after reaching Victoria?
I have noticed in the morning most Reigate/Three Bridgers to Victoria then form a Victoria to Southampton/Portsmouth and Bognor Regis. Those formed of 8/12 coaches.

My train today is booked as 12 carriages (16:30 VIC-EPD)

Not booked, it was booked 8-377. You won't see any booked formations longer than 10 coaches on Metro routes, of course this doesn't stop control allocating longer as they see fit.

Should’ve clarified that only Platform 15 at Clapham Junction can handle 12.
Platform 15 at Clapham Junction is 10 coaches only, the extension built lengthened it from 8 to 10 coaches. At present anything longer than 9 coaches can only stop if coming from the Down Slow, as anything longer will block the crossover which is very close to the London end of the platform. This however gets sorted at the re-signalling over Christmas when the crossover is being moved towards London.

They have been running as 12. Platform 15 is long enough if you measure on Google earth. As discussed, 10 cars is no longer the limitation because the 455s are gone and all the 377s have SDO.

Yes, they may be running as 12, but that doesn't mean they are booked to be - which as I said they are not.

If you're measuring Platform 15 end to end, you're making the incorrect assumption that the whole platform is used. The signal is set back from the Croydon end of the platform, as such the platform is 10 coaches only.

10 car planned limit still applies to Metro workings, this has not changed since the withdrawal of the 455s.

If actually true, that could cause havoc today. On a normal day that would probably be fine, but because Victoria is closed, the services are running all stops via Streatham.

At South Bermondsey it would come very close to blocking the main line. 12 cars running the other way would be even worse, likely blocking crossovers at Selhurst, Tulse Hill and Peckham Rye.

Not sure if it will be too much of a problem, are the trains that terminating at Selhurst today shunting at the depot or not? Otherwise yes this would cause huge chaos.

Also rear 8 coaches going to Tattenham Corner which really surprised me.

Thanks, most interesting.

So it would seem that 2tph Sydenham-London Br (plus the Overgrounds) is st8ll about right for current demand, and the additional 2tph from Crystal Palace to Vic isn't grossly excessive.

No 12-car Cat/Tat. Can only be a data error because to try and split 6/6 at Purley would not be possible.

They’re splitting 4 and 8, with 4 going to Caterham and 8 going to Tattenham.

Also, running 10 late from Peckham Rye already, such a long train is definitely causing problems.

It seems unlikely to be a data error since the outbound services also show up as 12.

EDIT : I have just spotted 12 coaches on 2H51. Very bizzare.

Honestly, if they're ending up running 12 coach metro services, then it makes me wonder why have they reduced the timetable so much due to a "rolling stock shortage."

They could have made simple changes such as running all of the now removed Victoria to Epsom services as 4/5 coach (since they are effectively only for Victoria to Mitcham Eastfields, Mitcham Jct, Hackbridge and Ewell East).

Gatwick Express services could all be reduced to 4 or 8 coaches, with the 387s also used on Eastbourne and Littlehampton services, freeing up 377s for other services.

Honestly I’m not really sure. I think Southern are giving them a go just to see how they run, so you could possibly see longer trains in December.

I think this is a data error caused by an issue with the attachment on 2J26, which by the looks of it then had a unit swap. The log seems to suggest 2J39 ran 8 377 and not 12 377 as your screenshot shows. Beckenham can't run with more than 8 cars anyway due to the platform length, you'd be well ahead of the signal when departing.

Don't read into these 12 cars too much, there is no formations longer than 10 cars booked on metro work from December.

We will not know if the 12 car was real or not unless someone actually physically saw it. Therefore I will remain neutral in the existence of this service. Southern's departure tool generally is rather reliable and with accurate data apart from that one 16 coach at Norwood!

Is Southern's December timetable even finalised yet?

I was actually there on yesterday when VIC-EPD trains in the evening ran as 12 coaches. We can’t confirm the other services because no one that we know of has seen it in person but it would hardly be a co-incidence, it even showed that the rear 8 go to Tattenham which would not have happened under a simple data error.

Southerns timetable isn’t finalised (as you would expect: it’s only been 3 weeks since the most recent timetable came out) but you can probably expect to see it 6 weeks before the date or 1 November.

Ah alright thank you.
I was reserving judgement completely as I remembered you went a few days ago and you had mentioned. :)

Yes I wouldn’t think the timetable would be finalised either. To be fair I didn’t even realise that there would be a timetable change considering in December, the September timetable would’ve only been 3 months ago?

September to December is only 3 months but I believe the next one is in May 2023 (a whole 6 months) so I think it will be balanced out.

I didn’t think London Bridge to Eastbourne trains run as 12 coaches? Can every platform that they call at on the East Coastway fit 12?
It’s the 21:26 I think?

Also seeing a 95 minute late Thameslink to Bedford

It depends, as the trains were not booked 12 car it's totally possible rear 8 could end up for Tattenham in an input error. Control are using a new system which came in earlier this year, so suspect they're still getting used to it.

The December timetable is finalised from a LTP perspective (before engineering works amendments), but STP (with engineering works) is still a couple weeks away at least till the first week of the new timetable is finalised for passenger consumption.
