The purist stuff doesn't bother me personally but I expect a few at the Bluebell may splutter at the thought of a loco produced in 1946 running around in wartime black and carrying a "Spam Can" number. (It's a rebuild). If Flying Scotsman can have the German smoke deflectors then a Bullied/Jarvis rebuild can be in black. Sorry for the divergence off topic.
I hope the event goes well. I won't be able to make it unfortunately.

Yes, it is an odd decision; it will just look wrong to anyone with any interest in steam, purist or not - not just a same-shaped loco in a different livery but a very different shape from the unrebuilt ones (and the light pacifics didn't carry black even when new, I don't think). As non-enthusiasts won't know it's wartime black (so won't care about the inaccuracy anyway), and enthusiasts will probably baulk at it, I can't see why it's been done.

Quite a significant difference between those examples, though! Just because 60103 itself didn't carry them, other identical class members did.

They’ve only just recovered from it being purple….
60532 Blue Peter spent much of the 1970s and 1980s as LNER 532, if I remember rightly.
60103 was fitted with German type smoke deflectors during it’s last year in BR service. With the current double blast pipe and chimney giving a softer (drifting) exhaust, I believe the defectors are now mandatory for main line running!

However, the loco appeared in LNER livery with the smoke deflectors fitted, which was "not authentic" to some.

Personally I prefer the A3's with smoke deflectors. To me they sort of 'balance' the appearance of the loco somehow - you'll either 'get' what I mean or not, best way I can think of describing it! Was always a fan of the German types various, which may be why I appreciate that look.
One important factor was that they were very effective, which prompted BR to fit this type of deflector to 55 A3s (towards the end of their careers!).

Better to have the loco wearing a questionable paint job than not having the loco at all. If the price of generating interest is an unusual livery is that such a price to pay? I would like to have had the opportunity to travel to school behind a Hall, even one in buffer-beam red, but then I am not a wizard!

However, I don't think a light pacific in wartime black will generate much specific interest - enthusiasts will probably not like it and non-enthusiasts won't know or care. It's not even a wartime re-creation event.
