Southern stations mysterious fanfare?

It's been bugging me for ages, the few staff I've asked don't know either. It's a 4-tone fanfare, seemingly only at Southern's stations. It doesn't necessarily precede or follow any announcements, it just happens. Sometimes quite a lot. File I caught of the sound is below.

I have heard that quite a few times at East Croydon, normally followed by 'East Croydon, this is East Croydon'
I seem to remember someone saying that it is quite old, dating back to NSE days.

I used to remember it played when the CIS changed to PLEASE STAND CLEAR - The train at this platform is ready to leave, or similar.

Edit: That was posted before I listened to the sound file. The old one was much better than that - the one in the sound file in this thread sounds like a cheap copy!

Is that not the tone which is played when the train is ready to leave? I've often heard it accompanying information on the CIS and an automatic announcement stating this, but not always. I'm not sure if it's automatically or manually triggered.

Well I thought that, until it did it a couple of times with no train in the platform.

Staying with the CIS 'the train now standing at platform x is the...' Is played prematurely before the train has actually come to a stand. I am sure in the past it was timed to more or less real time... Perhaps this is to deter people running for the train?

I think it is to draw your attention to an amendment on the displays like a late platform change or when the sequence of train arrivals at a platform has been changed.
