As far as services from London go:

Class 171 - London Bridge-Uckfield.

All Southern Metro routes will generally be operated interchangeably by 455s and 456s (the occasional 377 will turn up as well), although London Victoria-London Bridge via Denmark Hill is normally a 456. Also, London Victoria-Horsham via Sutton, although indicated as a Metro route, is usually a 377 route.

Often wondered how the Southern services work as on the class 455 and class 456s there are no gangways.

All metro services are doo, revenue staff as and when, but some/most stations are barriered with staff?

377s are diagrammed for some trains on all Southern Metro routes. So whether you get a 455/6 formation will depend on the specific train.
