But aren't all these tickets available at the booking office on the day of travel? Unless they are significantly cheaper on Southern's website I don't see what anyone has to gain by booking in advance.

It's only if you select the Tickets on Departure option. I think that will be to prevent possible fraud but it rules out anyone buying tickets who's local station doesn't have that facility.

The other advantage of buying standard tickets in advance is not facing queuing on the day or not risk having to buy tickets at a busy station where you are changing between services if your origin station doesn't have working ticket facilities.
