Just out of curiosity, if southern rail were in need of new EMUs to replace the 377/387’s what units would they likely to be using ? My biggest guess would be class 450 s from SWR , or 700 stock from Thameslink

Neither 450 or 700 would be spare. What’s going to backfill those fleets?

It’s completely illogical for 377s, (and especially the newer 387s), to need to be replaced where the only solution is to use stock that’s still in normal regular use by neighbouring TOCs or routes.

It will probably be some completely new train that has not been invented yet. It is still probably at least another decade before they think about replacing any of the Electrostar 375/377/387 units. By that time the manufacturers will be offering completely new stuff.

Short term, the 458s are an option for extra capacity. Unlikely but not off the cards.

Full fleet replacement probably wont be for a while, and it would most likely be fresh out of the factory.

Just a little thought and speculation here. Could SN, SE and SWR do one big group order to replace the 375, 377, 444 and 450? They are all similar in age, and have similar requirements for the design.

By the time replacement is needed it will be GBR making the orders. It'll be able to take an overall view of what stock is needed, and where. So long-term leases and cascades between GBR business units will be possible, just like in BR days.

Given the snail's pace that replacement of considerably older diesel units in less privileged parts of the country is proceeding at (and diesels have a shorter working life than emus potentially do), I wouldn't hold your breath. Southern are still in "mid-cycle", so their replacement units aren't even a twinkle in a designer's eye yet.

Yes potentially could be a massive framework order, possibly 2 suppliers.

If start adding in classes 357, 350, 376, 458 etc into the mix then could be looking at two orders of over 2000 vehicles each

Although to put quantity into perspective, there were over 13,000 BR mk1 hauled coaches built, so not historically massive numbers.

Timescale, probably another decade before thinking about it (by which time something new will be around), with delivery about 2039-2048
