A quick (trivial, regarding events in the past 24 hours) question from me regarding the above, can anyone in the know tell me if Southern crew sign from Portcreek to Cosham. I was under the impression they didn't, but watching open train times, a 1Jxx service was diverted because the points at Farlington locked up meaning no up services could run for an hour or so and so this train was sent to Southampton.

I assume if they do sign it, they're booked to pass across it once every so often as no southern services or ECS are timetabled over that track.
TIA

I'd be surprised if their route learning for the area didn't include it, it'd be simple enough for them to learn it and it's an obvious diversionary route for them. None of that actually answers your question, obviously!

See that's what I thought, but I hadn't seen any of their services, or any of their drivers over that one section of track (1 signal, 3 speed limits), but I've seen them regularly on SWT Botley services.

While I'm at it, how do GWR maintain Romsey - Eastleigh?

Do the Southern crew just learn it by watching a video if it is a fairly simple piece of track?

A few years ago Southern ran an all day Portsmouth to Southampton service during engineering works east of Havant, so at least some drivers must have either been specially trained or have it as a standard part of their knowledge.

Not every Southern driver knows Eastleigh though, I've been at Southampton where the mid afternoon service has run direct to Fareham as the driver has not signed the route.

GWR have one service per week via Chandlers Ford, it is an ECS on Sunday mornings that comes up from Fratton. Can't find the opposite direction though. They may just take an SWT cab ride?

Was that the same year a 377/6 got trapped the wrong side of Havant?

Cheers for all the answers everyone!

Late night routing via Botley for GWR

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/sea...3/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt&toc=GW

The southbound one even seems to stop at Hedge End and Botley.

It doesn't run direct from Romsey though, comes through Southampton Parkway.

The stops at Hedge End and Botley fill in a longer gap than normal in the hourly SWT service, but I don't think they would have any benefit in the other direction.

Sorry, the OP asked about the line via Chandlers Ford. That appears to be maintained for GWR by this Sunday morning empty working to Romsey.

Interestingly, this morning's Southern ECS from Portsmouth to Southampton (VAR this week as usually comes from Littlehampton) reversed at Havant rather than going direct from Portcreek Junction to Cosham Junction
