Southern platform sound

What is that slightly comical sound that is played at some southern metro stations as a train is departing?

It's consists of 3 tones.

It's the CIS screens that make the noise, it's designed to attract your attention to them, they'll just have changed to a message saying the train is about to depart. They also do it if there is a platform alteration, a fast trains is coming through or the order it is expecting the trains in changes.

Yes I know the one you mean, I think it just let know you passengers should stay clear as it reflects what the passenger information board says. It done at east croydon as well for mainline trains in peak time.

As mentioned, its intended to draw your attention to the screens, some are louder than others, like this one at Ford which is likely to scare the life out of anybody standing nearby...

At the LOROL stations which have the CIS administered by Southern, the tone is only used when a fast train is approaching.

South West Trains' stations also have a warning sound emitted from their screens but the sound is a much of a more ordinary "bing-bong" type. It's quite difficult to identify in my attached clip as it's played along with (although towards the end of) the typical four tone chime.

I always wondered if the three-tone chime you mention is played with a separate system - it seems to play when the screen shows one of the warnings even when there isn't an announcement.

Somewhere like Andover where there are no chimes normally might be a better place to get a recording, though there aren't nearly as many non-stopping trains there.

It's four tones: Doh - Me -Soh - Doh. Root, third, perfect fifth, octave. Never heard it before.

Swanwick is good for that one on platform 2
