"Southern Only" Travelcard

Hopefully a fairly straight forward set of questions:

If I get a travelcard with a "Southern only" restriction on it, would the restriction only apply to the journey outside of the travelcard zones?

ie:
Havant to Victoria would be correct and valid.
Havant to Waterloo via Guildford would be invalid.
Would Havant to Clapham Junction via Horsham, then Clapham to Waterloo be valid?
Assuming that it is valid as a normal travelcard once you get into London: If the Clapham to Waterloo section was done on a service that had called at Havant, would this open you up to potential allegations of using a ticket outside of its validity if the guard did a check near the end of the journey? Would the onus be on them to prove that you were travelling "incorrectly" or on you to prove that you had boarded from within London?

Southern Only is for the journey as far as Boundary Zone 6.

You may find issues at the Waterloo gateline if you use a Southern Only Travelcard, but the journey is perfectly legitimate if travelling within the zones. (e.g. Clapham Junction to Waterloo).

The Waterloo gateline rejects 'Southern only' tickets, but staff will let you through if you are making a permitted journey

St Pancras High Level will also reject a Southern Only Travelcard, but accept a Zones 1-6 inboundary Travelcard.

Going beyond topic (if such a term exists), I've recently discovered that I can save money by splitting my Southern Only Travelcard purchases at East Croydon (for travel from Gatwick). I'm not sure if there are any similar splits that would also save you money?

Split ticket engines will not find these savings because they don't deal with the strategy of splitting a Travelcard into a return to station X and a Travelcard from station X.

Yes, East Croydon/West Croydon is always a good place to investigate split options.
