Southern Only tickets can they be excessed into 'Any Permitted'?

Hello all,


Just a quick question regarding Southern Only Tickets

If I was to purchase a Southern Only ticket from Fratton to London terminals/victoria and boarded a South West Trains service towards Waterloo could this be excessed? or is it policy to sell a brand new ticket for that journey?

I dont intend to do this but someone raised the question saying the rule is to sell a brand new any permitted ticket as SWT dont get any money for the Southern Only ticket?

They are correct, you cannot excess from an operator-specific fare. So it would be a new ticket sold.

Or PF, if caught by an authorised collector (i.e. RPI), or, in theory, reported for prosecution (albeit that this is unlikely unless failing the attitude test).

In other words, the OP should buy a new ticket before boarding if intending to travel on a SWT service, although I note that the question is hypothetical.

Where possible, excesses should be obtained before boarding. This is doubly the case when travelling with a route/operator restricted ticket.
