I was on the 2G52 Caterham to London Bridge which I think is a 377/4 which was curtailed at New Cross Gate.

What I noticed was another Southern employee on the platform at NXG who checked the train for passengers and shut the doors before allowing the driver to go to the sidings. Was that the guard as I thought all London Metro 377s are DOO?

I think all Southern Metro are DOO. May have been a member of NXG platform staff doing the check (compulsory, I believe, before a train goes out of service from passenger use into sidings) to save the delay (blockage of running line and platform) that would be caused if the driver had to do it and then return to the front of the train to put it in the siding.

Probably southern middle management assisting as platform staff at NXG are provided by LOROL.

Quite possibly. Southern have dispatchers at LOROL managed Honor Oak Park for certain services on Platform 1, but have never seen them at NXG before.

That's for 8 car 455/456s as there are no mirrors for 6-8 cars so you cannot see the back of the train and Southern, LOROL and Network Rail can't agree who should pay for the maintenance to get the mirror positions correctly.

I think the gist of it is that LOROL won't pay because they are only 4 cars in length, and Southern won't pay because Honor Oak Park is a LOROL run/owned station.

If services are disrupted like the day in question some Southern staff have been sent. FCC staff have dispatched at Streatham on more than one occasion so as long as the paperwork is ok, its likely this is why Southern staff were there.

Assuming that LOROL plan to operate 5 car 378's on the ELL from December 2014, then they should at least come up with some of the cost?

I suspect LOROL don't need the CCTV irrespective of train length, as don't their units have bodyside cameras?

As do SN 377s; so could it be that there's no point in adding extra CCTV - maybe SN are about to stop using 455/456 on the route? LOROL don't own the infrastructure anyway, its still NR 'owned', so any financial questions would be between NR and SN I think.
