southern medical

I attended a medical @ southern but was told my blood pressure was high. Has anyone been in a similar situation before? Does it mean they won't now give me the job ? I'm now stressed because of it. Thanks.

I think you may be ok, but it would depend on the TOC policy. You've been offered the job subject to passing I presume?

Some people have been known to fall down on blood pressure because they are anxious about the medical, or even because they were rushing to get to the appointment. It would obviously depend on the underlying cause, what did BUPA say at the time? Have they referred you to your GP?

I would visit your GP ASAP and start by having your pressure taken again. If you still have problems then they will obviously investigate the problem, but if it is satisfactory then you may simply have had a 'bad day' at the medical. I would contact Southern and ask them how they wish to proceed, particularly if your GP reads your blood pressure as being OK. Southern may simply send you back for another try.

Yes i was offered the job subject to a satisfactory medical. The medical was yesterday so have not had a chance to visit my GP. They gave me a letter to take to my GP for him to advise further. It's 1st time having a high BP, but it was high: 178/106.

mine was quite high but it was white coat again , they still signed me off for 6years on the day , i assume you didnt ?

They are awaiting the results from the urine samples for drugs and alcohol screening. In the mean time i wait and stress over it.

That is quite high, I'd see your gp ASAP and if its ok just forward them to the medical guys at streatham hill. I wouldn't worry about the DNA tests you know yourself if you had anything to worry about

Eye sight, hearing, will check BP, will check glucose in from urine sample. Urine sample will be sent for illegal drugs and alcohol screening. Thats it.

The 106 is the problem, anything higher than 100 is not permitted by Southern for safety critical staff.

You probably had a high reading due to the stress of the medical so give your GP a chance to look at it.

If they are awaiting results from your drugs and alcohol screening then it sounds like you are ok. Why would they wait for these if they were going to reject you because of the B/P. I had my medical 9 weeks ago and my B/P was sky high. They realised it was probably because of the day and said if possible get my Doc to check it again. A week later and they started me on my course. According to my trainer you usually find out at your medical if you are going to be rejected there and then.. Hope things work out...

It's actually anything higher than 90 on that second reading for southern. But as has been said you should be fine as you'd know here and then. I had my medical on the Friday afternoon and started the following Monday.
