Southern keyGo error 89

Got this error when touching in this morning. Been using keyGo forever. Anybody know what it means? A cursory Google search yielded nothing useful. Thanks!

89 on a Cubic gate is Unknown Card Type, though it's possible it was a read error.

Which station was it at, out of interest?

Just a guess but has the card expired? I believe they do have an expiry date (10 years from issue I think). Looking at my account it says my KeyGo expires on 15 August 2030.

No idea how you renew it, or if it's a new card job.

It needs a replacement card as the expiry date is coded at the time of production and can't be altered as far as I know.

Launched in summer 2014 I believe on Southern. Mine was one of the first, initially issued for testing, and expires in October. I expect there are some that have already expired. It'll be one of the oldest cards regularly used on the Great Northern bit of the network.

Mine expires 1 October this year. It originally had a season ticket on it, now it is just KeyGo. Annoyingly unless it has rubbed off, the expiry date is not on the card itself. The expiry date is on a page on the website that one wouldn't normally look at even for those who do use the site - i.e. it isn't the page with the journey history.

It is a new card that replaces an expired one. I have happily used it for the last few weeks.

On advice from Southern customer services, I visited the ticket office at my destination and they confirmed the card was working. Indeed, I could also scan it with my phone and the Southern app.

I did a little test on the way home at Blackfriars and successfully scanned in and immediately out again at the gateline.

Thus I can only surmise there was a reader problem when I attempted to scan originally. The readers at my local rural station have recently been replaced. Perhaps there are some teething issues. Customer services agreed to get the Station Manager to investigate further.

Slightly off topic - but given mine only has a limited time left did they send a new one automatically or did you have to request a new card as the old one expired?

It arrived automatically. I think mine expired sometime this month.

We saw someone whose card expired back in June 2023:

They were probably one of the first to have their smartcard expire, at which point the replacement process had to be performed manually.

It's good to hear that GTR are automatically sending out replacements now, though.

Just to close this out: I used the reader again today and it worked fine. Not a card error then, but a transient reader error it seems.

My GTR Key expired in March. Left it for a week or so then followed the renewal steps online; error so impossible to renew online. Went via CS and a new card was received a few weeks later.
