Was on the train this morning to Victoria and the driver was reading out rail-related poems :D Anyone heard him before?

Were you on the train from East Grinstead to Victoria arriving about 0810? I hear him quite regularly always brightens my day. He did a good line in football related banter during the world cup!

Yeah I was ... funny how at Victoria the doors were stuck! I quite liked this poem about not sitting in 1st class without a valid ticket!

Especially since the company are paying an On Board Supervisor to deal with announcements, tickets and customer care.
Not on metro services, those are DOO.
How about the time tunnel train driver ie. Steve Copley who does great banter day in day out? He won RailStaff Driver of the year 2016 cuz of it as well!

The company will play along until it goes pear shaped then hang the poor bugger out to dry.

PA is for essential use only, not to try and be funny especially when your driving the train !

What difference to using your mobile whilst driving ?

the guard on my virgin train at the weekend was playing songs over the PA - i thought it was a bit cheesy but the majority really loved it.

You have to look away from the road when using a phone whereas once you've got the PA on, you can speak and keep looking ahead. It's the same how you can now make calls in cars with Bluetooth by just speaking out whilst still looking at the road and not even touching your phone, hardly dangerous. I'm sure someone with the capability to drive a train will know when they're in a situation to quit the jokes and be serious; the change in tone would likely make the passgers pay even more attention too.

If things go pear shape it won't be because he's and experienced driver who wants to put a smile on people's face, i doubt it would be related to the PA but I agree Southern will throw him under the bus as if they never liked the good publicity he gave them. Similar to the DLR PSA that got recognised a year or so ago for his smooth style of announcements.

Well... quite a lot of jobsworths' in this thread!

I've never had him, but I've had friends who frequent the Southern network who have had him a few times - they really appreciate it. It's a small thing that the passengers legitimately enjoy, and Southern are probably just happy to have anything that makes their customers less angry at this point.

I'd expect the driver to have good judgement and use the PA in this way as long as it isn't interfering with their other duties and not putting his passengers in any undue danger. In fact, as they're more likely to listen to him, I'd say this is a good thing. Steve (and other unicorns like him) are a rare breed and they wouldn't be getting recognised for awards if their behaviour was putting passengerts into harms' way.

"Mind your fingers, Mind your toes, the Big Green Doors are about to close"!
Roses are red, violets are blue, this train will now depart from Platform Two

There once was a man who snorted
And who here would have thought it?
When across the range
Saw something strange.
See it, say it, sorted.
