Southern Driver Benefits

Hi All,

I see Southern are advertising for both Conductors and Trainee Drivers at the moment. Can anyone shed any light on the benefits you get from the start?

I am particularly interested to see if you get to enrol in the Railway final salary pension scheme from the start, as I read Greater Anglia you don't!

Also, how long do you have to be at a depot before you can out your name down for a transfer out?

Also, does anyone know if there are free staff parking spaces at most depots such as Selhurst or Brighton?

Hi mate. I'm at Selhurst depot and as far as i can remember u start paying into theprnsion scheme straight away. As for parking spaces... You will be able to park at your depot wherever you are and will get a permit to do so. Selhurst has plenty of parking spaces and has two secure staff car parks whereas brighton staff get a permit to park in with the public i believe.

As for a transfer. I wouldn't advise going straight in and trying to transfer immediately. Get all your training done and do the job for a while first then maybe think about it but ideally you'll want to go in at your closest depot from the start to save all the hassle.

There's nothing stopping you from asking for a transfer immediately though technically as your circumstances may have changed.

There is a lot stopping you from asking for a transfer immediately. There are a few threads on here regarding internal transfers that are well worth reading before you make a decision on depot.

Thanks. I would rather apply to be nearest depot (Brighton) that apply for the London ones and spend 3 years commuting before being able to transfer.

Not really. It depends on the circumstances. I know a guy who literally just passed out and said he had split uo from his wife and had to move down to worthing so he managed to get a transfer to Brighton.

It is very bad advice. There are plenty of threads here discussing the problems associated with transfers. I know someone who got a transfer the day he passed as a Driver but it is very unique and very rare. You are at the mercy of the TOC and available space at the depot. They never have to grant a transfer.

And if the company get wind that he is taking the **** he will be out on his ear, and rightly so!

We have a driver who has accepted a transfer to another depot and they are now trying to get their partner down on a hardship move, the company have told them that as it is their own doing its tough!

As i said in my original post, you are better off trying to get the depot closest to you to begin with.

I have seen people get on trains without tickets and get away with it but I wouldn't post how they did it on a forum!

Have you read my initial post? My advice was to try and get in to your local depot. I was simply just answering his question from all angles. A forum is a place to express opinions and views is it not
