Southern Downlander/All Network Downlander. How does the e ticket work

Hi, thinking of using this when down in Brighton in March. Probably leaning toward the all network ticket which I think allows me to go on the North London part of the southern network as well as the Downs area. Can anyone tell me how the e ticket works? Thanks.

You purchase the downlander online, at least two days before travel.
When ordering, you have to state a means of identity that you will have with you on your travels.
When complete, the ticket appears on screen and you print it off.
Take with you, making sure you have the selected form of ID in your possession as well.
Had a number of these and they are excellent value.
If planning to use the buses in the Brighton/Eastbourne area I would also print a copy of the validity etc, as some bus crews have never heard of them.

Brighton to Gatwick is not Gatwick Express despite being an extension of GatEx in the peak, so you can use the ticket for that section.

I expect there is a perfectly logical reason for it but why do you need ID with a Downlander ticket but not with a Daysave ?

DaySave do not have names printed on them AFAIK, and are printed on common stock.

The Bton to Gat legs of the Gat EX only run in peak times M-F and the Downlander isn't valid then

While the Downlander isn't valid in the morning peak, it is valid in the evening peak.

Downlander's great value, even from the midlands or north-west, if you can get yourself to Milton Keynes for the 10.13 to Clapham Junction, and don't miss the 19.39 or 20.39 back from Clapham Junction. A cheap trip to Brighton or wherever.
I've only once had a ticket inspector tell me I should have exchanged the e-ticket at a ticket office for a "real ticket," but he obviously didn't know what he was talking about and hadn't seen many of them.

Ive twice done a downlander, had the selected ID present, but never been asked to show it.

While the Downlander isn't valid in the morning peak, it is valid in the evening peak.

Which is why I said not valid bton to gatwick as he said he was staying in bton

The reason I asked about gat ex to Brighton is that I will be travelling about the network and may try to get one othe evening ones from Gatwick to Brighton in an effort to get on a 442. Perhaps there are other services which are operated by them.

Indeed there is. The 0714 from Eastbourne to London Bridge and the return journey at 1823 on weekdays are booked for 442s.

And many of the Brighton Victoria fast trains are 442s

Thanks for that. I hope to get on one at some time during the day. Also want to take the once a day train that goes to Southampton via Eastliegh. Would probably get off at Eastleigh for a bit and then buy a single to Southampton before returning to Gatwick or Brighton. BTW, How can you tell which VIC BTN are 442 operated?

In the timetable (No.01), those with a black square (restricted access) in the "Notes" above the times are booked 442s.
