It gives the following as a restriction:

DaySave can be used as follows:

* Anytime on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays
* Not before 10:00 Monday to Friday
* Not between 16:45 and 19:15 Monday to Friday when boarding trains from East Croydon and London stations (Victoria, London Bridge and Clapham Junction)
* Group tickets are valid for up to four people (adults or children) who must travel together at all times.
* No railcard discounts available
* Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded
* The ticket is valid for one day

Please note that you cannot use the services of any other Train Operator with this ticket.

Does that mean it can't be used when boarding trains in the Peak time from East Croydon and London station if you're boarding from those stations, or not at all on trains that leave those stations between those times?

Simply, you can't board trains in London before 10am or between 16:45 and 19:15 Monday-Friday. You can travel on any other trains in this time, though.

It means that you cannot board any train at East Croydon or the list of London Stations between those times. However if for example you are at Gatwick Airport and want to go to Brighton at 1800 you are perfectly free to.

No the prior to 10am restriction is for all Southern services regardless of where you board.

Cheers! I think it's brilliant value - days off-peak travel for only £10, or £30 for during peak as well. Should be a great opportunity to explore the Southern network.

Do any other TOCs do similar rangers? I'm not fully clued up on them.

not aware of any other TOC specific ones. There should be. Northern would be a good player

DaySave allows unlimited off peak travel throughout the First Capital Connect Thameslink route on the day the ticket is valid, on First Capital Connect services only. DaySave tickets can be bought from the outlets below but are not sold at stations or online. From 2 January 2009 DaySave costs just £14.00 per adult and up to four accompanied children travel for £2 each. Group DaySave tickets allow up to four people (adults and/or children) the freedom of the route and cost just £35. Please note conditions below.

DaySave cannot be used before 10:00 Monday to Friday, in line with the validity of Network Railcards. They are also not valid for travel on northbound services departing Moorgate or St Pancras International between 1630 and 1901 for journeys to any station between St Albans and Bedford inclusive. However, DaySave can be used at any time on weekends and Bank Holidays. It's a great value ticket that i have used a number of times during the last couple of years.
Once when I was staying in London I did the following on one of these tickets:
West Brompton-Clapham Junc, Clapham Junc-Hastings, Hastings-Ashford, Ashford-Brighton, Brighton-Ford, Ford-Clapham Junc and Clapham Junc-West Brompton.
All for £10

Last year I stayed for a week in Brighton and had DaySave tickets on 2 or 3 days travelling one day along the coast and visiting Littlehampton, Chichester, Portsmouth and Southampton. Another day I vsited Bognor and then travelled up to London via Horsham, Dorking and Sutton, followed by a few South London routes from London Bridge before returning from East Croydon to Brighton.

Another useful ticket also only available via the Southern Website is the Network Downlander which is slightly more expensive at £12.50 but does not have any evening peak time restrictions in the London area. It's still only valid after 10.00 am.
In addition this ticket also includes bus travel in the Brighton and Eastbourne Areas. I found this ticket very useful because it enabled me to use the Brighton to Uckfield bus to link with the Uckfield-London Bridge rail service. Also it made a nice change to be able to use the bus between Brighton and Eastbourne for a ride along the coast road.

Both of these tickets, if you are not bothered by the 10am time restriction (but not Saturdays and Bank Holidays) are a cheap way of travelling between London and the South Coast.

A question on the Network Downlander - on the Southern website it states valid on all the Southern network - now does that include their service from MK to East Croydon in it's entirety ?


Can anybody confirm either way? I wouldn't be surprised if it started at Watford Jnc or Kensington Olympia, but would be interested to know.

Good question. The Southern website shows the central part of their network as being as follows, and doesn't yet seem to include the additional stretch between Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction, but perhaps it simply hasn't been updated yet?

Worth contacting Southern at their Croydon HQ to confirm, I would suggest.

I used a Daysave ticket from MK on the first day of the Southern service. None of the ticket inspectors at MK had seen them before but it was definately valid.

Such good value, Milton Keynes - Brighton and back for £10!

Good value - too right, it's only a little more than a return from Northampton to MK

whilst apx068 has had one accepted, National Rail has a list of the staions it covers which doesn't include MK- could the MK staff have made a mistake, or is the NR site not updated either?

It says valid on all SN trains, and when they wrote that they did not run to MKC, so logically it's not been updated yet.

I don't think they can have a leg to stand on legally if they try to stop you.

Valid on all trains means... valid on all trains.

And if the rules contradict themselves then, in consumer law, the consumer wins.
