Forgive the potentially daft question but the Southern Day Save has restriction 'not valid on trains departing East Croydon, Clapham Jn or any of the London terminals between 16:15 and 19:15' so does this mean I cannot board at those stations, or not board at any station call on trains calling at those stations within that time frame. For example, can I board 1F52 at Hastings at 21:00 and travel to Ore as that train departed East Croydon at 19:10?

According to National Rail, the restriction is:
"Not valid when boarding at a station within London Zones 1-6 on trains departing London Terminals after 16:14 until 19:16."

So that would suggest your trip to Ore is ok.

Quite - that text is from the restriction code applicable to Southern DaySave is DS (visible at nre.co.uk/DS).

Which is still ambiguous. Is it the time at the station you board, or the departure time from London Terminals that determines which services you can catch? Albeit all fine for the OP, at least.

Seems pretty clear to me, depends on the departure time leaving London Terminals, but no evening restrictions apply if you board outside zones 1-6.

This is an awful restriction as it is not compatible with the fares data specification.

Why on earth have they used "after" and "until" as their time delimiters? It's illogical to quote two times within the restriction text for which the ticket would be valid. It's valid on 9:14 departures and on 19:16 departures.

The text also conflicts with Southern's description of their own ticket that only quotes 4 stations.

Who's right?

So it is purely the departure time from London Terminals that determine validaty? A 16:25 from East Croydon would be valid if it left London at 16:00 (made up times)?

Certainly not the easiest restriction, and not well explained either IMO.

You can refer to whichever one works more in your favour - if it influences your purchasing decision, it becomes a term of the contract under section 50 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. However I suspect GTR's intention is for the restriction code's wording to be the one that prevails.

In practice I doubt GTR's Pricing team are particularly concerned about people making short local journeys within London; it's really the longer journeys (e.g. towards Gatwick or the south coast) that they will be wanting to restrict, to limit the perceived revenue 'loss' from people who might otherwise trade down from pricier and less restrictive Off-Peak tickets. That is why they will be referring to boarding at those key stations in the website description - it is where the vast majority of the long distance traffic will be travelling to/from.

Yes it is a complicated restriction.

As yorkie said it can't be replicated in the industry data (take a look at this on brfares.com eg https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail?orig=BTN&dest=QAS&rte=777&tkt=SD1 and journey planners won't interpret it as meaning the service passing through those stations at those times, only if you board/alight there) but this isn't much use for a flexible ranger product so you have to rely on the text only.
