The Southern website has a link to the Railway Safety Certification Part B
Version 2.3 - December 2010 document which has a fleet list on the final page that mentions a single class 09 used for "shunting and de-icing at engineering depots". Does anyone have any further information about this unit, including where it is based and what livery it has?

Also, the same document notes that the class 460 fleet is due to be completely off hire from May. Have they gone yet?

The 09 is 09026 in BR Green which is based at Brighton Lovers Walk and de-ices around the depot confines. :)

Thanks for your response - it's strange that a company with an exclusively EMU/DMU fleet would have a requirement for a shunting vehicle, but I suppose de-icing means it earns it's keep.

Does anyone know whether the 460s are gone from Southern yet?

Saw a couple with the baggage car removed whilst passing Stewarts Lane on the SLL the other day. I think 1 or 2 still operate at the moment, not sure though.

I've seen one in service today and 2 at Selhurst depot (one in the cleaning shed, one on the new sidings), so not quite gone yet.

It often moves 442s around because they have the same coupling. Can also be used with emergency couplers if a unit has failed in the depot.

One of the possible uses for a shunter (but not here at Brighton) is to push/pull a DC EMU through a wheel lathe. Siemens had a shunter at Northam for the Dessies but later it was replaced with a battery powered tug.
