Let’s hope today goes well and the unit is safely delivered. It will be the culmination of just over two years hard work for me which began with a Teams meeting and then writing a paper to justify why a 313 needed to be designated and then preserved. Following that there were numerous emails with positive results and then a disappointing outcome resulting in the designation being switched. It was a great day when 121 was formally designated but it all went wrong when the intended destination for the unit pulled out.

Thankfully I had an idea for an home and I made it my mission to get everyone who could make this a reality in contact with each other and come up with a plan.

I’ve been involved in seeing a lot of stuff saved over the last three decades but this was a real mission and there were times when it felt like it would all be in vain.

It’s going to be important to me to see it unloaded and in it’s new home. One day I’ll tell the story in more detail of this battle !!
Fingers crossed it goes well. Well done to you and the team.

Update from a colleague on an official visit to Eastleigh on Saturday and observation from the bridge Tuesday 313210 has now been cut up and 219 is now on the scrap line being separated into individual coaches with 62611 first in line. Interestingly no flame cuts have been taken (yet ?) so unit number is still showing on unit 219 so perhaps there was no real interest in them as I saw some on ebay a week or so back.

Just superb to see another 313 preserved. I wish those involved in each project all the luck as it's not easy, especially with the relentless negativity surrounding EMU preservation.

Regarding the hydrogen 314, last I heard at least one carriage is destined to remain at Bo'ness for preservation, a right result considering all the talk that Bo'ness had no space and didn't want one when the class was originally withdrawn in 2019.

So we have 2 313s, a 314 carriage, and a 315. Are there any plans for a 507/508 to be saved?
Nothing officially stated but rumblings that one (presumably a 507 as these finish last) will be kept for the expanded Wirral Transport Museum and Dock Branch Park project in Birkenhead.

508 preservation looks doubtful with all the serviceable ones due to leave by the end of the year. However, two near-original carriages remain at the Emergency Services College, Seacombe, which might make for an interesting restoration project.

The only thing they will need will be either 1 or 2 middle coaches to create a merseyrail 3 coach as they were when transferred up here from thd south OR as an original 4 coach 508/0 as they were when built because as the 508s have 2 air compressors compared to only 1 on the 507s, a 508 rebuilt and restored in a 4 coach formation could recreate 1 as they used to be before coming here.

I often had the thought that had the 508s retained their 4 coach formations, granted 8 coach running would have been impossible without major rebuilding work on the underground and the above ground stations but each unit could have handled more passengers than they can now as 3 coach formations.

An unusual project for the 2 coaches at Seacombe would be as above to recreate a 4 coach unit, however, how about a straight 6 coach unit comprising of the 2 motor coaches + 4 trailer coaches ( 2 of which could have extra motor bogies and shoe gear and as it would be a 6 coach unit, the classification for it would be something like 508/6xx ( the 6 representative of the number of coaches in this case ), bonkers and highly unusual I know but I think it could / would work.

It would be very interesting if a 4-car 508 could be preserved. I remember seeing them on services out of Waterloo late 70s/early 80s on my few trips into London. It'll mean having to act immediately if a SWR unit is withdrawn so the correct numbered trailer could be obtained to insert into the selected ex-Merseyrail unit

The 2 x 313s are 313201 and 313121 which actually towed 313201 back to the south after it was repainted into the revised blue and grey.

Just a gentle reminder that the topic of this thread is Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates. If anyone wants to discuss anything else, such as Class 313 preservation, then they are welcome to start a new thread elsewhere.

thanks

Update from the fence. 313203 now split and being readied for scrap. 313211 is now shunted across and is next in line it would seem. Single car from 216 is still sitting there outside the small shed

What's the other 313 and where?
313.201 is at Eastleigh and looks to have a future

Have 202, 214, 217 and 220 been completely scrapped now?

202 went in June, 220 in July. Not sure about 214 and 217
I have 214 down as having been actually scrapped in June 2023. 217 I only have as having moved to Eastleigh in March.

Are we also safe to presume that the rest of 216 has been scrapped from your previous tweet of having seen just the solitary carriage left?

I'm off to Eastleigh this week so Where's the best place to view the remaining 313's?
Campbell Road is your only public place to view the 313s from.

Speaking of, 211 is the next unit to go, 213 follows it in the scrap road.

211 was being split yesterday ready for the chop. Last coach of 203 was dealt with yesterday. 313205 is the unit sat on the siding by 213 and has been there over a month now. 313208 has been shunted over and is currently attached to the remaining coach 62608 of unit 313216. Its beginning to look a little empty of 313's now, must be at least half way through them by now

313217 is indeed still at Eastleigh. It is on the far right of the holding sidings and is now the only unit on that road
