I need to travel from Southend to West Croydon, one way, weekday, off-peak, with a senior railcard (but not yet loaded on my Oyster Card). Given that at some stage I need in any case to load the railcard on to the Oyster Card, do I simply buy a through ticket from Southend Central (£12.40 to "Croydon Stations") or do I travel to Upminster and get my Oyster Card updated there, and book again?

Much cheaper to split at Upminster if you don't mind a longer journey time.

A single Southend Stns - Upminster is only £5.30 with your Railcard, and Oyster PAYG from Upminster to West Croydon, changing at West Ham and Canada Water, is only £1 with your Railcard, or £1.50 even if not.

Presumably the Oyster PAYG fare also allows the (slightly) faster alternative using c2c to Limehouse and DLR to Shadwell?
