Hi what stage did they ask for GCSE certs etc. Were they needed at all? Struggling to find mine so may need to order copies ASAP.
I wouldn't have thought they require them especially considering I left school over 30 years ago.
You fill in the right to work through Zinc, thats all that will be needed.

They needed mine 4 years ago and I left school longer than 30yrs ago! If you don’t have definite proof of your qualification, you may have to do the functional skills week. It’s not massively hard and you’ll get plenty of help if you need to do it.

Cheers, may be easier (and cheaper) doing that. My old exam board want £70 for a copy of results.
That's the first ive ever heard of it but researching it up, looks like we can do it alongside the rules training at the beginning.
Apparently it's quite common especially for us oldies.
It changed either this year or last year.
I signed all my onboarding paperwork in February 2026 and wasn’t asked for my GCSE paperwork. (Left school in 1996)
Before you start at the assessment centre you’ll be asked to complete an English and maths exam online, then it will grade you a score for your learning coach to understand any needs you may require before starting.
Thanks Mickey I left school in 1990, so my English and Maths are probably not quite up to scratch anymore.
That sounds like a better way.

It goes off what qualifications you’ve already achieved, not if you’re still up to scratch. I think the benchmark is GCE “C” and whatever the subsequent equivalent has been over the years. If you’ve got that with proof, you’re fine.
Mickey said its changed and that he didn't provide his GCSE results and he had to sit an exam instead.
When I say up to scratch I mean having to do a course again.

Yes I read that. What I mean is, if you can provide them/proof, you shouldn’t need to do any more exams. I had an issue with my certificates which I still have, so had to do the week. i get it’s probably not a week now as it’s changed.
I mean my school has long gone and it was so long ago, if I have to redo the functional skills for Maths and English, or just do the online exam beforehand than that is not a problem.

Got you. I thought you were just going to do the extra if you had your certs or not.
Which is what Mickey alluded to earlier.
During my interviews I used the star method as best as I could for the situation based questions then for the rest it was sort of just what I felt was good enough

Hi MickeyC, I'm starting in August (yay!), is there any reading/studying I can do in advance?
I saw another post where someone was linking to the RSSB safety manual, is it worth trying to study that before the course?
Are the assessments multiple choice online type or paper based comprehension style?

Hi mate, congratulations on your start date.
Right, please don’t get ahead of yourself and start reading things.
Having now almost finished the course, it’s designed to layer the information to you in a manor that’s manageable, Reading ahead without railway knowledge will get you in deep water with no life jacket.
Trust the Southeastern training process, do the homework and revision and you’ll be fine.
The assessments are a mix of written and multiple choice answers on a tablet.
Yes you will get 21 question before the MMI, you can't fail that but they use it to ask you probing questions during your MMI Interview.

That's what I was thinking lol, dont start going your own way, im starting in August and its best to go there with a blank canvas.

Had my DMI today, pleased to say I got a positive call and I’ve been offered the role. No training dates as of yet but understand it’ll probably be January. Thanks all for anything posted on this forum, it’s helped a lot

Got offers for both. No news about any start dates for either so will go with whatever comes first, although Thameslink looks like they won’t be till mid next year (not official of course). SE at Dartford is my local station so preferred in that case. SE know about it and are very supportive of whatever I decide
