Hi all

A couple of weeks ago I was stopped by southeastern enforcement at Charing Cross station.

My ticket had only been bought as I arrived at Charing Cross and stupidly I only booked the ticket from London Bridge rather than my actual stop of Westcombe Park. I normally have a correct weekly season ticket from Westcombe Park but as I was going away the next day had not renewed and didn’t tap in with my contactless card out of habit.

I was questioned under caution and admitted the offence.

I have now received the attached letter and have drafted the response below.

My main questions are:

1. I have previously not paid for the full fare, not recently since I’ve been buying the weekly tickets but maybe 10 times in the last couple of years. Should I mention this if the letter does not discuss any other incidents? Or wait to see if southeastern bring it up?

2. Should I immediately mention settling out of court or wait for their reply to my initial letter?

I would also really appreciate any feedback on my response and any other advice from users on here.

My response, which I intend to email and also send via post.

Dear Southeastern Debt Recovery and Prosecutions manager

I am writing in response to your letter regarding the incident which occurred on 24 June 2025 at Charing Cross station.

I intend to fully comply with your investigation and have provided the full details of the events that day below.

While I normally purchase a weekly season ticket for my journey from Westcombe Park to Charing Cross, on 24 June I was going away that week and so did not renew it.

Regrettably, I did not purchase a single ticket or tap in before starting my journey as I should have. I only purchased my ticket upon arrival in Charing Cross and, in a stupid attempt to reduce my fare, did not buy a ticket for my full journey from Westcombe Park, booking it instead from London Bridge. I was then stopped while leaving the station by one of your enforcement officers, to whom I admitted the offence.

I deeply regret and sincerely apologise for my failure to pay the correct fare and for not purchasing a ticket prior to the start of my journey. Upon reflection, I understand the negative impact that not paying the full fare has on the ability of rail operators to provide a service to myself and fellow passengers and I have no intention of repeating my mistake.

I would very much appreciate the chance to settle this matter out of court. I am willing to compensate southeastern for lost revenue and any additional fees incurred during this investigation.

Thank you for your time and I await your response.

Yours sincerely
My name

No, only discuss the content of the letter you have received.

Yes, you don't want to drag this out.
I would also really appreciate any feedback on my response and any other advice from users on here.
Your letter looks good and ticks all the boxes.
