Southeastern was one of the last TOCs to the e-ticket party but has finally started to issue them and enable them on their flows.

Unfortunately it’s been done in a pretty half-arsed way and currently they will not offer them on most journeys that are to or from a gated station.

On one level this is understandable (not acceptable, but understandable) – perhaps they think the level of usage would result in the gate attendant being overwhelmed – but they have failed to recognise intermediate validity. A ticket from, say, Stone Crossing to Kidbrooke, which they will happily issue as an e-ticket, is perfectly good to travel from Dartford to Eltham, which are both gated. I strongly suspect one or both gatelines would refuse it.

Southeastern provide a list https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/tickets/tickets-explained/etickets of stations to which e-tickets can be used. It is long, but not every station. The issues could arise with break of journey or starting/finishing short at a station not on this list. Might be worth gathering some information on, if anyone does these journeys?
It's not a list of stations to/from which they can be used, but rather a list of stations to/from which they'll be sold. As per the above example, the fact that e-tickets won't be sold to certain intermediate stations doesn't affect the right to break your journey. However, doing so will (at a minimum) involve a bit of hassle as you have to show your e-ticket to barrier staff - and in the worst case scenario, they might (wrongly) refuse it on the basis that they don't have the capability to scan e-tickets.
