Interesting to see that on Sunday 16th March, Southeastern's diverted Hastings to Cannon Street services will be running via, and calling at, Redhill and East Croydon. It's surely been a good few years since a Southeastern service actually picked up and set down passengers at those stations. Certainly diversions via this route in the last couple of years have been non-stop between Tonbridge and London Bridge. I wonder what's brought on the calls this time.

The full list of departures taking the Redhill route from Cannon Street is here: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/CST/to/TON/2014/03/16/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt and here's the "up" list: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/TON/to/CST/2014/03/16/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt.

Not but that day the line between east croydon and clapham junction is closed , all trains must be going via herne hill and crystal palace I guess? Journey time is 30 mins so I guess that with reduce capacity they will try and send more people via london bridge?

Technically SE stop at East Croydon and Redhill all day every day as they crew the London bridge to Tonbridge services.

Ah might have hit the nail on the head by accident the London bridge to tonbridge services are curtailed at Redhill and depart just after the Hastings bound trains. So the Hastings trains are taking the tonbridge train paths and calls.

SE used to stop 2tph at Redhill and 1tph at East Croydon all day when they still ran the Tonbridge-Redhill Line. There was 1tph Tunbridge Wells to Horsham via Redhill, and 1tph Tunbridge Wells to London Bridge via Redhill.

Now that's something I never knew before! Is this something that happens a lot in certain places? I know about stuff like the Northern/Scotrail services, and the obvious Thameslink ones, but never noticed this one!

I didn't see that but indeed it seems to be a distinct possibility.

I presume they will use the line between redhill and tonbridge
They will indeed.

I found this out to my detriment. It seems that Southeastern guards are trained to sell change of route excesses at full difference rather than half the difference in price!

Yes, but Tonbridge services are usually started and terminated at Redhill on Sundays in the "winter" timetable. Through Sunday services to London Bridge usually only run May to September.

It's a shame the Tunbridge Wells to Horsham service ceased but I suppose there was probably a lack of demand. That said the airport seems to attract a certain degree of custom from Kent and having to change twice from most destinations is a pain. There used to be extensions through to Gillingham via the Medway Valley at one time didn't there?

This is a bit different to those examples though as it is advertised and operated as a Southern service throughout rather than Thameslink which changes advertised operator at Blackfriars and the Glasgow to Newcastle services which change at Carlisle.

Yes definitely, was the closest example I could think of though, and for the ones you mentioned to the average punter (i.e. me at Glasgow Central once, seeing the train advertised once and not knowing it was a joint Northern service) it can be hard to distinguish! Many people still blame FCC when there are delays on the Thameslink SE operated routes, and don't believe FCC when they reply saying "that's not our service"

There are 3 services to London destinations scheduled to call at Redhill on Sundays. Bognor to Victoria, Horsham to London Bridge and Brighton to Victoria. On this Sunday the Bognor service starts at Horsham and runs to London Bridge. The stopping Brighton service which runs via Redhill is amended to run fast calling only at Gatwick Airport and East Croydon on it's way to London Victoria via Herne Hill, so the ex-Hastings services provides additional options in place of the diverted ex-Brighton service.
