Morning, does anyone know how far the 3rd rail went towards the Old Southampton Terminus before Northam Train Depot was set up, Seen pics as I know it was on the triangle before in went out of use in 1972 but wondered how far ?

This has come up somewhere else a few months ago, and no one could give a definitive limit for the third rail - although it was generally agreed it never reached Terminus.

Vic Mitchell's book on that section of the SWML confirms that all three sides of the triangle had third rail as of 1969 (on plate 114) and I reckon if the idea was to use the triangle for turning electric trains you'd have to assume it went at least a couple of hundred yards south of the 'south to west' junction.

(I see that junction was known as Southampton Jn - you learn something new every day... :D)

Shame they closed Southampton Terminus really, would be useful for the Ocean Terminal and Ocean Village. Absolute gridlock around Dock Gate 4 when a ship is in!

What was the reason given for closing it? Funnily enough I have just been reading an old book about BR's Southern Region, and all it says is that it was closed in 1966.

I've also looked at the disused statiosn website, which seems to confirm that electrification never reached Terminus. It says that only Reading, Alton and Portsmouth services used it near the end:

From what i remember as a kid in the 70s in Soton i think it went as far as chapel road level crossing which had a signal box to control the crossing . This level crossing (now open) was gated and was one fo the last in the area to lose the traditional gates (excluding Marchwood which remains i think)
