hi lads have seen a train leaving southampton at 11.06 to exeter on oct 1 on the national rail website travelling on south west trains yet when i went to the ticket office in southampton to purchase the tickets the man in the office said there is no such train running and that all trains to exeter change at salisbury.im not sure if this is a new service that they are not sure about but national rails phone number confirmed that train is available[confused]. please can someone help with this as im itching to book but concerned to book online only to find out on the day that the man in the ticket office was right.

Due to engineering work between Basingstoke and Salisbury that day, London Waterloo - Exeter St Davids trains are being diverted via Southampton Central, so yes your train is running that day and it appears the man in the booking office was wrong.

That said, there are no cheaper Advance Purchase tickets for the 1106, so no benefit to be derived from purchasing ahead of travel. Anytime Single is £30.50

Leaving Southampton a bit later at 1110 and changing at Westbury for onward train to Exeter St Davids will currently cost you just 13.50 for an Advance Purchase single.

I think the basic issue is that SWT do not have an Advance fare from Southampton to Exeter.

The 1110 will be an FGW plus connections, I expect.

Now that is a bit weird. £8 Advance Single to Barnstaple from Southampton Central. A fare priced by First Great Western yet valid on a diverted SWT service. Appears available to purchase via First Great Western's booking engine, so if you're going to Barnstaple then purchase it from them.
