As said above, Freightliner don't operate all the container trains out of Southampton, DB Schenker operate some to, true, Freightliner operate the majority of the services out of their Maritime and Millbrook terminals, Maritime recieve their containers direct from the quay/ship via straddle carriers which bring them on site, Millbrook has its containers delivered by their own small fleet of trucks which shuttle back and forth from Millbrook to the quay (a job i done for Freightliner for a year or so), as a result im still in regular contact with these drivers, they have told me that once the new cranes are up and running (and from my regular visits to the docks i can confirm they are dam near finished, anybody else noticed they have the old Freightliner logo on them as opposed to the new class 70 style Freightliner logo?) Millbrook terminal will close, now i believe Freightliner have Maritime depot on a long term lease, but they own Millbrook, so they can do what they like with it, however my question is will the rail regulator (or whoever) allow them to do this, can they make Freightliner sell it if they don't use it so another operator can have a crack at it? Ive heard GBRf would dearly love to run container trains to Southampton but simply have no where to run them to, the only other loading point in Southampton docks is 109 berth, this is where DB Schenker load and run their trains from, they work alongside a road haulier and container storage company called Pentalvers, Pentalvers bring the containers either from the quay or their storage yard to be loaded on the trains, they also fuel up the 66's for DB Schenker so they don't have to run to Eastleigh for refueling, i would guess that DB Schenker probably run 5-6 trains a day out of Southampton with Freightliner running the rest (10-20 a day at a guess?).
Hope that helps.
