Swinton rail station, has two platforms and is on the junction between the sheffield-leeds and the sheffield-doncaster lines.

You get freight coming from the barrow hill loop, includes coal and intermodal and some stuff from peaks as well as a little bit of steel to Corus Rotheram. Light engine moves (particularly FL to midland road).

Then local northern services, cross country services and TPE services.

Doncaster is known as one of the best places in that area. Ample freight, varying different traction and both diesel & electric passenger stock!

You also have Barnetby, Milford Junction, Thirsk & Wakefield.

if you are looking for South Yorkshire in particular I wouldnt do Thirsk & Milford as they are in North Yorkshire, Wakefield is in West Yorkshire and Barnetby isnt even in Yorkshire. It is in North East Lincolnshire! :) (sorry Twoonbuzzer!)

head for Doncaster.

Swinton or Doncaster are your best bets, or if your feeling brave, Hatfield and Stainforth

Barnetby isn't in North East Lincolnshire, it's in North Lincolnshire ;)

Not only that, but I think the OP was specifically asking about places
where he can spot from the comfort of his car, rather than standing
around on windswept platforms! ;)

I read it as perhaps referring to spots that are trackside, IE: not stations, and possibly rural.

Anywhere on ECML is good but if you want to sit in car AND spot, then choices limited. I sometimes park up near Rossington, place called Penny's Crossing but you still have to walk through a Palisades Swing gate to get best view track-side. Best spot from car is at Bawtry on Gainsbrough road, layby just after bridge, plenty of high speed action too.

And yes it is in Yorkshire .. South .. just by a few yards, boundary is River Idle ...I think ??? long wet thing full of water!!
